Oh wow, they are expensive prices! $22 for a basic sausage and mash?!

And I hope they mean custard;

"BLACK BERRY AND APPLE CRUMBLE

  • Bird's Mustard"

Right! When we were poor in my family when I was really young, we frequently had sausage mash and gravy because it was a cheap meal.

Hahaha, Bird's Mustard. Can you imagine pouring mustard on a steaming hot Apple Crumble, the horror 😂. Speaking of Custard, it's been to my horror that local to me is about 4-5 different Custard restaurants...all of which serve Custard frozen. I had no idea until I moved that Americans are horrified at the thought of hot custard.

I am super disturbed by both of these things; custard needs to be hot! I don't think I've seen any frozen custard joints though - if I have I've probably just assumed they meant ice cream. Really fancy an apple crumble now, though. 😐

As am I! Custard needs to be piping hot, poured onto a slice of cake in a bowl or a nice Apple Crumble. As best I can tell going by recipes for both, it's flavoured custard but frozen. It definitely contains egg though. Never thought I'd miss an Apple crumble, but at least that's fairly straightforward to make with accessible ingredients. I attempted flapjacks over the weekend for the first time, they were good but I was short on golden syrup which is incredibly hard and expensive to come by (About $5 for a small squeezy bottle).

Hahahahaha same, I avoid public bathrooms like the plague. Can't get used to it, it's too weird!

I also can't get used to Americans greeting you by saying "how are you?". Just say hi, we both know you don't care about how I'm doing and I don't really want to ask about how your day is going in return. 🤷‍♀️ Also saying "excuse me" when you pass someone in a store aisle or wherever, even though there is plenty of space and you can pass the other person with ease.

In other words, I miss the European standoffishness 😂 I find it hard to connect to Americans, can't tell when they're being polite or actually interested.

Excuse me for coming across as the world's grumpiest person lol.

OMG so true lol!

I assumed that only people from former USSR think similar! I am from Kazakhstan but sometimes i hear people talking behind something like “OMG she passed by and did not say sorry! She must be Russian!” 😂

i was literally 2 miles away from you when i was passing by 😆

And yes hard to tell when they are sincerely nice or just being fake nice or passive aggressive

I know what you mean. It always irks me when I'm in a store, and there is a space the size of a football pitch between us and I hear an 'excuse me'. Like...dude you're a million miles away from me, you could fit the ISS in that gap. Back home using 'excuse me' is usually done with a stern voice, shaking your head as you walk away from the 3 old ladies who think it's acceptable to stand catching up on their life stories in the middle of the aisle.

Wetherspoons! I miss that place, and I never thought I'd say that XD I made the mistake of going to an "English" pub. Looked the part but the food wasn't quite right. Couldn't say whether the beer was any good either as it was the middle of the day an hour from home.

<<<<Canadian asking dumb question. Is there only one Wetherspoons in the UK?

I successfully made sausage rolls at christmas - though the pigs in blankets they expect here aren't what I'm used to...

When i had my two weeks internship in UK back in 2015 i felt more comfortable for sure as nothing could shock them and they had adequate reaction to everything. Even in Canary Wharf in London. Even at TESCO no one wants to know how is your day going! 😂

During My 4 previous touristic trips to USA i did not notice such details maybe because i was rambling on mostly with my friends or other tourists and did not go to those specific local places.

But this time I can clearly see every cultiral difference.

I miss:

* Small talk in UK - no need to constantly talk in groups. Keep 'er minimal

* Pasty baps, battered sausages, crisp butties

* How easy it is to travel between towns and cities - in N Iron it wasn't that long to travel

* Cheap prices (except fuel LOL)

* Pubs, bars and greasy spoons!!

Oh yes English and Ulster frys!!!!! With beans too :P

Wetherspoon is a pub chain, they usually buy historic buildings and theme their pubs on what the buildings were. The one I worked at was my towns Post Office and sorting center in the late 1800's. The building was derelict and they re-vamped it, keeping a lot of the original timber and rooms.

They provide 'theme days' such as Curry Club Thursday, Wing-it Wednesday as well as set menu items and very cheap beer, IPAs and lagers and a lot of other drinks on tap. Contrary to popular belief it's not 'end of date' product, but it's bulk discount. Some Spoons also double as hotels too at very competitive rates.

Menu is pretty cheap, you can get a burger of choice with onion rings and chips/fries and a FREE drink for about £7.99 (14 CAD). If you ever visit, it's worth a look in.

There are firs here too, but it's not the same, especially in winter :)
