What if we can't meet financial requirements?

The financial restrictions exist for valid reasons... if you cannot improve your income level and do not have a co-sponsor, you will not qualify. Your only other option would be to move to the UK.

She has already indicated that sponsorship to the U.K. is also not possible.

HAHAHA ok grandpa  im giving put downs! i didnt tell you to stop giving yourself a pity party when you were in need of support.

Telling someone to stop having emotions while in a depressed state already over their situation is just cold. All she wanted was an answer to her problem, not a lecture on how to feel. Im sure once she gets the answer she needed she will calm down, but for now shes upset and worried, the results will come from the support that was given when she is ready to calm down, not when shes told to.

I saw that comment but wasn't sure whether that was what she was referring to. If that's true, then improving their income situation is the only option, I'm afraid.

And before that happens, the pity party (the one in the OP's mind) will have to end. I understand the emotions and don't expect them to go away but before the income correcting action can take place the OP will need to stop throwing the party to celebrate those emotions and get with the solution. The solution is to earn more money. No additional education is required. Work is what is required. Call it rude if you wish. I call it harsh reality.

I agree, great advice! The OP will find very useful this type of advice, even when it might sound harsh to some people.

I've been in a fairly similar situation, money-wise. po' college student with a crappy part-time job.

My fiance was here on a student visa and graduated in December. I moved back home nine months early in order to work and save up money. (Living with my mom & not having to pay for rent/food!) I chose not to be with him over the summer, in Canada, so that I could work and save up money.

I took a semester off of college and continued to work and save up money.

I went back to college only part-time in order to work and save up money.

I am lucky that my dad is willing and able to co-sponsor us. However, as someone has already pointed out, getting him over here is only half the problem. The whole process only gets more and more expensive as you go along. On top of that, he (probably) won't be able to work for ~ninety days once he gets here. Supporting two people on a single, small income is one challenge that I'm not looking forward to. (And we have several thousand in the bank, combined.)

Okay, enough about me. :P Not that there's much that hasn't already been said:

get a second job. It really isn't about education. I don't have a university degree yet and I'm making $9.50 an hour doing secretarial work.

have patience. Your situation is only as hopeless as you make it sound. And the more hopeless you get, the more convinced you become that your situation really is hopeless.

Although I am curious -- have you two met in person? (Traveling is expensive.) That's also a requirement for the K-1...

My suggestion is that you get a second job. Work part time at a fast food restaurant if you have to. You don't have to make the money last year. You can annualize this year's income and back it up with current pay stubs at interview time.

Forgive me for continuing to sound so dour but.... I work full time fast food already. Last year, the year I made the most money, I earned 9800$. I've been pushing and pushing for management within the company, and I know I'm impatient but Im feeling incredibly incapable. Depression makes everything harder, it just does.

The financial restrictions exist for valid reasons... if you cannot improve your income level and do not have a co-sponsor, you will not qualify. Your only other option would be to move to the UK.

Jen

That was our first attempt. He does not qualify to sponsor me as well. In July '06 I attempted to fly to UK, and was stopped at the gate. After a year of personal research, I thought I was set. I get to the door and immigrations stops me because we're too poor. After an evaluation of both of our skills and income potentials, I was denied Leave to Enter. I dare not attempt such again until I'm rich enough for UK. (thank you very much UK for making the process happen at the door, after a 14 hour flight)

I do appreciate what support I can get, pity party or not I am in an incredibly desperate state and no amount of repressing or diverting is going to help that until I know that my efforts are actually going to give me what I need.

I see many of you have indeed been through and are nearing the end of your processes. I cant help but be a little jealous; seems everyone but me is capable. I feel as if I have been ready for this to be over for two years, and the process has yet to start for me. The process may never start if I have no hope it will. Without hope there's little motivation.

Have you tried a different restaurant within the company? Have you tried a different company altogether that might recognize your experience and give you the management position?

Have you tried going to a temp agency and they helping you find a job that's more lucrative?

Just trying to think of some ideas for you. :)

Yay ideas! =D

Yes, I've considered and must pursue finding advancement and movement to other units within the company I work for (Taco Bell). I *am* pursuing that but my pessimistic attitude doesnt see fast enough progress >.<

Temp agencies - possible, but I have attempted to get in with those in the past. I have no high school equivalency, so I do not qualify for many of the jobs temp agencies offer. I am 4'10 and female, I cannot do construction. Those are the only temp jobs available in my area, and at the risk of sounding like a bigot - the Mexicans get those jobs. How they got here and got legal employment is beyond me; I guess everyone else can find a sponsor eh.

So, more work you guys say huh? I'm willing to do whatever it takes, I always have been. The fear that my efforts are useless hold me back.

Thank you all for the information regarding requirements; I was unsure whether my income was going to be considered cumulitavely or based on my potential income.

I'd also pursue getting your GED as well, if that's a big thing preventing you from getting better employment. :)
