Kat,

No it's perfectly normal to feel homesick. My husband has bouts with it too, and he's been here over a year now.

Maybe since you arent working you could do some volunteer work to keep you busy until you start work?

I hope you are feeling better soon. (F)

Hugs to you

Normal, just don't let it be the cause of any arguements.

I intend to keep busy by fixing things around the house and going to the Gym till I get my EAD through, try to find a hobby or something.

I still feel homesick sometimes and long to go home and see friends and family. I'm lucky that my parents and brother come out here regularly to see me, and my wonderful husband does not mind spending some of his vacations back in London. It really helps if you can meet people here in the US and form friendships, and have something to concentrate on before you start working - its makes it all a little easier. Whilst I was waiting for my green card / EAD, I studied and became a licensed real estate agents, and since being able to work, also work for a local home builder (working with two other Brits believe it or not!). I did do voluntary work with a local cat shelter to fill my time before the green card arrived. I made lots of friends and it gave me a sense of purpose to be actually doing something positive. I still do some voluntary work there and there is also a social scene with the other volunteers. My best friend here I met on my real estate license course and we see eachother every weekend. It does really help having good friendships and a social life with others here - it makes the missing home a bit easier.

I think if you are unable to work then life can get lonely and then homesickness sets in.

Its perfectly normal and will improve once you get that EAD and you can work again. Then you will be wishing you didnt have EAD....lol

Cheer up, your friends on VJ are here for you!

:)

It happened to my ex-husband while we were doing AOS -- he felt really disconnected from everything and everyone. He volunteered and did a bit of under the table work (shhhh....) We ended up moving back to London before we got the green card, but not because of the homesickness -- then it was MY turn to feel disconnected in a foreign country!

As someone who's felt it on the other side of the pond, I know just how cr*ppy it can seem, and how the days can drag on. It will get a lot better very quickly. Everyone's who's mentioned volunteering is right on the money -- follow your passion!

Big hugs from London!!!

I think it helps to live in an area that reminds you a lot of where you're from. I hated England (no offense - actually I loved Northern England, North Yorkshire and the Peak district ie Bakewell but hate hate hate hated Nottingham/Leicester), I was always homesick, it was so flat, boring, I couldn't relate to anyone or anything.

When I was in Scotland, it reminded me so much of Central Pennsylvania hills and cows and more "blue collar" attitudes, even fridges and vehicles seemed bigger :P I rarely felt homesick, I felt very comfy there. Now I actually get home sick for Scotland once in a while, but mostly I just get home sick for my hubby and son. I wouldn't mind moving to Scotland for him if he really can't stand it here in the end, but I feel we will definitely have more chances here and better opportunities, and no mortgage wuwu!

:crying:

It is soooooooo normal. I had lived in the USA for 10 yrs previously and realised that that icky yucky feeling of homesickness is all part of living in a culture different than your birth culture. I have been here this time for 2 yrs years and still have days where I long to be squished on a tube in london or walking to work in the rain. Its all part of the ongoing process of adjustment which to some degree will go on for how ever long u live here. BUT......theres hope, think of all the cool things your mates would die for which is such common nature here in the USA. When I am homesick I find that keeping busy, remembering all those months of being apart from ya man and focusing on the future and what opportunities which may lay ahead.

If it makes u feel any better I'm feeing pretty homesick right now...would love to be eating fish and chips and being with all my family and friends :) Volunteering will be a great thing....u will have purpose, focus and feel needed........... all things which we all need!!!!!

Good luck :)

Hi Kat! Which british pub did you go to here in Orlando? Spence and I have only been to the George and Dragon on Internatial Drive at the suggestion of another VJ couple we met there.

Are you in Orlando or Jacksonville?

Sounds like you are on the right path by finding a volunteering opportunity to meet new people and work in a field of interest.

I completely understand about the homesickness.

I have been here a month now and, after all the endless waiting, now that I am finally here with my wonderful husband I feel awful that I am homesick! I have the temporary EAD, but it is sooooo hard to find a job in NYC and I am kindof feeling drained by the whole AOS/job application process.

Anyway, I made some chocolate chip cookies, with Cadbury fruit and nut, had a cup of Tetley tea and made toast and marmite for lunch!

Crazy though it sounds, these have made me feel much better!

The volunteer work is a great idea though. I volunteer once a week at a yoga studio and I get to then go to as many classes as I want for free! It seems to be a good way to meet people so I don't become a recluse and scare my husband with my excitement each day when he gets home from work!

Good luck at the Humane Society. It sounds like fun!
