Missouri legislators in Jefferson City considered a bill that would name Christianity the state's official "majority" religion.

Parents who feel so strongly about their children praying in school ought to send their children to schools in which praying is expected, encouraged, and probably even mandated.

And what about the religious child unfortunate enough to be borne of athiest parents? Will the public school provide him or her a safe sanctuary to indulge in some private prayer, or not?

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

As unlikely as that one is, sure. If the child wants to pray individually, or with a group of like-minded students on a voluntary basis, that should be--and IS--allowed.

Is it? Aren't there schools that insist even that kind of prayer be "silent"?

And for the record, that is the only kind of prayer I'm talking about.

It's as tough on the religious child of atheist parents as it is on the atheist child of religious parents, I'm afraid. Neither are realistic, though. At least not for the young ones...

A school disallowing spoken prayer, again assuming that it's student-initiated, voluntary, and private, has gone too far and is breaking the law. Court cases have found as such, and if those schools were sued, they would lose.

The old Berg, several years ago. I do remember hearing that it burned. :( Right down the street from the J-slums...

Did you go to Mizzou, too?

HOT DAMN! Mizzou's campus is very nice. I seriously considered transferring there, once upon a time.

Also, the first time I ever went to a Target was in Columbia!

Damn, Columbia...I'm surely oversentimentalizing it, but I had some fun times there.

Yes....Mizzou has some fun times. Some of those times I will NEVER repeat! It's a nice town. Seems to be growing sooooo fast now. It's the big city life in a small city. They say though that Columbia will double it's population in 10 years!

Good Lord, I got stinking drunk more than once in Columbia. Had a run-in with one of the Mizzou cops once, too.

I remember Columbia having a very nice downtown with all kinds of fun shops. I remember more than a few bars. ;) Mostly I just remember hanging out with my friends and having a great time. Ah, college...

Harpos!

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

had to listen to some fairy story concocted by some nutters 2000 years ago....

That said, I totally respect people beliefs, whether they are christians, jews, muslims or else, as long as they don't come and have religion shoved down my throat.

Hmmm, how can you say you respect other people's beliefs, when you just referred to catholics as a bunch of nutters?!? Think before you write!

Ridicule doesn't kill, hate and ignorance does.

How many times do I see threads bashing at muslims or gays on these threads, but that humor doesn't seem to offend anyone. Imagine if someone decided to set up a community based on islamic principles. I think it will be really interesting to see how the discussion all turns out on VJ...

Regarding some of your own criticisms at least look at the other point of view first. I am quite happy to listen to yours. I don't want to get into a long theological discussion. I am just suggesting you should listen to the other point of view sometimes before jumping in with your sweeping generalisations.

Sometimes I think I know everything, and I regain consciousness. Seen it all, done it all, forgot most of it....

So much plenitude, yet so much emptiness
