DRIVER'S LICENSES RENEWAL

I noticed a lot of applicants need their extensions to renew their driver's licenses. We are from Washington state WA and the State is pretty independent from the federal government on issuing ID or driver's licenses.

Many people, uscis applicants or even undocumented people get their driver's licenses independently from their legal permanent residency status.

My Spouse got her driver's license before even filing the AOS

WA and California (I'm pretty sure) only require that you provide proof of being resident of their states, not of the U.S.

We provided proof of domicile in WA state (bills, lease, etc...showing that my Spouse reside in WA).

It's interesting to see how States work differently.

Exactly.  My Colorado drivers license expires in 2023.

Hi, I know you may not like what I am about to say, but I am trying to put a different angle on our issue. Why we are waiting and waiting.

I have copied a link from uscis.gov and its says that USCIS have received applications for first 3 Quarters to date : Total: 5,668,544.

I-751 ROC : Total: 132,250 !!!

That is more than 132 thousands forms and documents and the year of 2018 is not over yet. I can`t even imagine how many cases USCIS receive every day not counting weekends and holidays. Also the packages are coming in different forms: some of us will sent few documents and some more than hundreds. It must be crazy to store all of it, put it in order, cashed the checks and more. Can you imagine receiving so many envelopes and boxes every day?

After this they have to check everything. I am not sure how long it took you to get everything together but my package took me several days. They have to double check every line on application, every document, put the check in the system, issue RFE, send it back if necessary...and more.

I think that you guys understand my point. It must be huge operation. They must have huge warehouses and a lot of people, just to keep the files in order and safe.

How many cases  1 employee can do a day? And I am just talking about ROC. They have AOS, Asylum, I-765, I-90 and way more stuff to do every day. Look at the charts.

Being said: if you try to look from the other side the volume of the applications and work it has to be done is huge. I know it is a year of 2018 and with the computers it should be easy but it is not no matter what. It takes time. I am not trying to defend anybody. It is just my opiniom. Me and my wife are also waiting for NOA and we would be better off to have it right away but we don`t have it and we have to wait. We have to because there are a lot of people like us who applied before us . So we are in the same boat.

That is my two cents.

Happy Thanksgiving!

So 30 days from the 19th of October is when they said you should call - and you called on the 19th of Nov. Then on the 19th they raised an e request and advised to make an infopass appointment for 30 days since the eRequest which would be the 19th of December - Sheesh. Perhaps I should make an infopass for the 7th of December since if I don't get the NOA by the 5th, I can reach out to them.

I do have a similar situation. We mailed our application on October 15th. Forgot to send G1145 with it so we are in dark. Saw our check was cashed on October 19th. And that's about it...

Then here I am on November 20th, 31 days after October 19th. Called USCIS this morning. A representative answered right away after I got through the automated system. Rep provided me the receipt number (LINxxxxxxxxxx), and told us that a NOA1 was sent from USCIS on October 18. She marked the NOA1 in their "non-receipt" category, and request a re-send of NOA1 within 15 days. If another 30 days go by, then we can call back again.

I entered the LIN number during the call on the Case Status Check website (https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do) but it says:

Quote

Validation Error(s)
You must correct the following error(s) before proceeding:

  • My Case Status does not recognize the receipt number entered. Please check your receipt number and try again. If you need further assistance, please call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283.

So the rep says there is one more site we should sign up for case status - MyUSCIS, and "Add a paper-filed case" (https://my.uscis.gov/account/onboarding/track/new). I entered the same LIN number and it shows:

We received your case

You do not need to do anything at this time

We will let you know if we need anything else from you as we continue to review your case.

So now I will cross my fingers and wait for NOA1 to arrive, hopefully before December 20.

Correct. This is how Ohio works.

I am due to renew my license in January because it's tied to my Green Card Expiration.

Once I get the letter extension I am going to DMV.

I see. So you had to wait to get your green card to start driving in Ohio? Or did the work permit help to get your license?

I got it with the work permit then extend it with the Green Card and now I will extend it with the extension letter.

Interesting to hear about all the different driver's license rules. We had a weird situation because of the expired green card/no driver's license situation, too, but it was a little different than these. We moved to Minnesota in August and applied for our new driver's licenses then, and it didn't seem to be a problem that my spouse's green card expired soon, fortunately! However the Minnesota DMV is extremely backed up, so here we are near the end of November, 3 months later, still waiting for our new licenses. With no license, my husband has been using his green card as his ID when buying alcohol, but it expired last month. The other day we were at a bar and got carded, and the bartender wouldn't accept it due to the expiration date. Fortunately we had a scan of the NOA letter on our phones, which we showed him, and my husband finally got his beer............ lol. Bureaucracy!!! It's not just USCIS that's slow, I guess!

Haven't received the NOA yet so went to go get I-551 stamp for one year extension because drivers license expired along with the green card. They took fingerprints and my husband's photo at the same time. They also kept his old green card.

Is there any reason we will need the NOA for future petitions or interviews? I remember needing to submit a NOA for one application at some point back in time. Just worried we'll need it down the road and we don't have it.

Now I'm seeing some people get their NOA fast and some after 30 days have past. What if I get the letter and it's extending the green card by 18 months but the stamp says just 1 year? Already went to get the drivers license so too late for that. Hate having to renew and pay for a new license ever so often.

Hi Becca & Doody, I'm a lil confused. How did you get the I-551 stamp 1 year extension? Is that an option if you didn't receive NOA/extension letter or can anyone go and get it?

Hi there,

For the i-551 stamp, you need to set up an appointment at your local uscis building.  The stamp is valid 1 year and you need to bring your unexpired passport.

It's an option for those who want to travel overseas and don't have the 18 months extension letter yet to prove the continuation of their legal permanent resident status in the US at the border when they come back.

If you have a plan to travel overseas while waiting to receive your notice, the stamp might be an alternative option for you.

The I797C notice of action aka 18 months extension letter used to have a validly of 1 year as the i551 stamp. So now extended  to 18 months is a recent change made by the uscis due to backlog. But this change doesn't affect the duration of the i551 stamp.

Thanks for the explanation! So I'm assuming the stamp serves as work permit also right?
