As soon as we got the 10 Year Green Card, we added it, the updated social security card, and the driver's license (with married name) to our list of online documents for the N-400.

Within the same week that we uploaded the updated documents, we got our N-400 Interview letter.

Just saying....

Do one need to go back to Social Security Administration to update the SSN with the 10 year green card?

Prok....Yup!

We went to DMV first, because they are close, and they said we HAVE to change the SSN first.

But said that once we go to Social Security Admin and file, we do not have to wait to get the actual updated SSN card.

They said give it one day and come back because DMV will be able to see in their system that we had filed for the name change.

And that is exactly what happened.

Went back to DMV the day after we went to SSA, and they saw we had been to SSA, and we got the updated driver's license in minutes.

We got the updated SSN card a few days later in the mail.

So, we scanned everything and then updated our N-400 documents...and that same week...got our N-400 interview letter.

All easy peasy!

If you want to change the maiden name on the SSA card and the driver's license, you will need to update your file at SSA first.

Whether you have to actually "GO IN" or do it some other way or not (say via mail or online) etc. is another matter.

We are close to DMV at home and close to SSA at work, so going in made sense for us.

If you are a CR-1-based immigrant and your visa and passport are in your maiden name, your conditional Green Card will be in the maiden name as well.

To change to the married name on the driver's license and social security card, you need to have it that way on the permanent green card (or some other legal name change document subsequent to getting the visa).

So, after I-751 approval with the married name on the green  card, that can be used at DMV and SSA.

If you are a K-1 visa holder, the sequence is slightly different, I think. AOS allows you to change it.

Yes for name change but not just for getting the 10 year card as he asked

Well, to be more precise, you do not change the actual SSN = Social Security Number.

You keep the SSN; you merely change the NAME on the account, if that is what you seek to do.

You generally rarely actually change the SSN, except in extreme cases. i.e. fraud, identity theft, witness protection, etc., by getting a new SSN.

If you have changed names, then you are best off changing it at SSA.

But no, if you have no name change, then no need to do anything at SSA.

SSA and DMV

Regarding "GOING IN"...

Not sure if you can change marital status, citizenship, etc. online at SSA, but it might be possible.

Not sure what can be done at the Oath Ceremony either (voting registration, etc.).

Not sure about DMV either.

Will find out in February/March.

Hi Guys,

So We are still Waiting. It is X-mas and we hoped the 10 y card will be here. But it is not. And that is ok....:-)

Oct.`18 -  LIN filer,

Bio done July `19,

Update on old tracker "Case Was Updated To Show Fingerprints Were Taken" last week,

New account or USCIS account still showing " BIO review completed in July `19 "

We have been checking some numbers around ours and almost everyone has been approved or RFE was issued. With us: nothing. We don`t even get the email or txt updates from USCIS anymore.

I cant think about what went wrong. If we should have filed differently. More documents or something else. But we have used the Lawyer to overlook our packet and he said everything was perfect.

Only one thing maybe : I am not big on Social media ( FB )..... my wife is.... and I have read that USCIS is checking social media very often to see if the couple is legit. But it may be a rumor. I have hear that they are also accessing the GPS locations for couples cell phones to see if cell phones are in the same location every night. But who knows?

We have nothing to worry about. We are happy and healthy!

Lets wait. Lets get ready for N 400.

So being said: We would like to wish to all of you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! And thank you for all the help here VJ...:-)))

Consider filing the N-400 for citizenship as soon as you qualify.

We did, and still got the 10 year green card without any obvious delay, and are now scheduled for our citizenship interview.

Hi Suze1,

The only 2 reasons we did not file yet are:

1) people started to get approved so early so we had the feeling we will get too

2) since we have a small baby we did not want to have a combo Interview to drag him with us for it

We will wait till January/ February `20 and we will see then.

Hopefully we will see our 10y GC soon.

Thank you and have a good day!
