Expected this to be easy instead of problem starting out

I haven't been on here for a long time. But was here a lot during my wife's green card process. Received lots of help here.

Anyway, I expected a citizenship application to be a piece of cake, since everyone I know who has recently went through the process, told me that's the case. Well, that went south immediately.

When filling out the n-400 application online, my wife's surname will not fit on the online form. It's too long. So I thought, oh well, it will be fine. Then I get to the question that asks us to put her name in EXACTLY as it's printed on the Green Card. Well, guess what? Impossible. Why would they print a name on the Green Card that will NOT fit on the citizenship application? Do I have to use a paper form? Ugh.

If you are encountering issues with the online form then do the paper filing. You may find that the last name does not fit the black field either but at least you have the option of add a sheet of paper for clarification.

A sheet of paper?  How long is that name?

If you do paper filing instead of online filing you can add an additional sheet of paper for whatever field/question/response that needs extra space or clarification. That is the benefit of filing the "old way". It does not mean that the whole last name will use all the space in the paper. I know some people have many last names and many names, etc. Like the royals pretty much. :P

Use the paper application it will still get converted into an electronic format and will have an IOE case number. You’ll be sent a code to set up your online account so as to track progress, get notifications etc.
