Hello everybody,

I have a lot of troubles getting my SSN because according to the people at the social security office my name is to long for the system.

After more than a month of going to the office calling etc. today they called back and told me the only solution they can think of is having my name changed at the department of homeland security. But with them I can't make an appointment for something like that.

I'm getting desperate and aggrevated, those people that work at the office here are so incompetent and I don't know what to do anymore. Surely I'm not the first one with a long name that has to get a SSN.

My wife contacted the state representative, hope they can help too.

I only used my usual-most used first name.  I also have four first names 5 letters+5 letters+10 letters and 10 letters + last name 6 letters.  Long name was also problematic with driver's licence 😕

I can't do that unfortunately because my names are all in my passport and they asked for my passport. Also DHS used all my names in their system and it has to match with what the SSO put in their system.

Got the same problem with my 3 "first" names. They used my initials for the second and third

Did you have to go to homeland security first to have it changed there? What the SSO is saying, is that if they enter my name in differently than homeland security did when I entered the US, it will not be approved by homeland security.

Thank you for the response.

All USCIS documents are in my official long name. Only my SSN is the "2nd and 3rd" initial form. It might be that your SSN officer entered names in the "first name" field. Mine entered the 2nd and 3rd in the "middle name" field. But I have had that card for years and used the number on all my USCIS documents without ever getting a question or remark or RFE.

I also suggest finding a different office to go to. The ones dealing with exchange students appear to be far better at this than a local "middle of nowhere" one.

I went to two different ones in Baton Rouge. Maybe I should try New Orleans if the state representative is not able to help.
