Hello. Do I need to print/fill out the Social Security replacement card application before I go to the Social Security Administration office or Do I need to fill one out there in person? This is for a lost SS card. I have a valid EAD based on category 09.

Is showing the EAD enough to get a replacement SS card or do I need to also show my Birth Certificate?

My EAD is valid from 8/8/18 - 8/17/19. Which day will I be eligible to renew if there is no decision on my AOS pending application at that time? Do I renew 6 months before expiration date and is the EAD extended for 6 months from expiration date?

Posted (edited)

I'll defer on the lost SS card...I think different states have different requirements for a replacement card. I know some states nearby me let you apply online for some services, but my state does not. I would assume it needs to be done in person for a non-citizen, though.

You will need evidence of your identity and evidence of authorization to work. If your ID (state ID/driver's license or passport) is in another name, you need evidence of the name change (i.e. marriage certificate or court order).

You can apply for renewal 120 days prior to expiration. If filed timely and properly, the existing EAD will be automatically extended for 180 days. This means 8/17/19 + 180 days (not 180 days from when you file).

Note this is 180 days, not 6 months. Minor difference, but still important distinction.

State is Texas. Online is only for USC. I checked. It has to be done in person but I know I can print the form and take it there to save time. Would they accept that?

My original SSC had a middle name.

DL has First and Last name. I am single.

180 days is 6 months. What’s the difference? How can I get a 1 year extension or is it not possible?

I see no reason why not.

No, 180 days is 180 days. This could be more or less than 6 months by a few days, depending on what period it covers.

There is no 1 year extension. But if you file the I-765, upon approval they will issue a new EAD valid for 1 year. The existing EAD is extended by 180 days in the meantime.

You will file for the 1 year renewal. You will get the 180 day extension on the existing EAD automatically by doing so.

So it's just one filing.

If you file before the existing EAD expires, you will get 180 days extended on the existing EAD. So say it expires on 1/1/2019...as long as you properly file before that date, it will be extended until ~7/1/2019 (I say approximately since I'm too lazy to count exactly 180 days from 1/1/2019).

At the same time, if the I-765 renewal is approved, you will get a new EAD valid for 1 year from the date approved.

Just for filing before expiration gives me 180 days extension whether approved or not but if approved I also get 180 after the 180 extension?

All this assuming my AoS is still pending.

If the I-765 is approved, you get 1 year from the date of approval (just like a brand new EAD).

Correct. In all likelihood, your I-485 will be adjudicated before the I-765. At that point, the I-765 is no longer needed since the green card supersedes it.

When should I get my replacement SSC? I went to the SSA last Friday. I know it says 1-2 weeks. It should be quicker right?

Once the application is sent, it's usually received within a couple weeks. My experience has been about 1 week, but keep in mind Monday is a holiday too.
