Long time no see, welcome back.

sod off about trolls just because someone makes a legitimate point in here once in a while. modesty: freedom from vanity or conceit.

1. the quality of being modest; freedom from vanity, boastfulness, etc.

2. regard for decency of behavior, speech, dress, etc.

3. simplicity; moderation.

why do women so persistently shoot themselves in the foot with this kind of stuff? free to be valued and prized for the content of their character and minds instead of physical appearance, they use what is supposed to be a refuge by wearing hijab to once again put physical appearance at the forefront. ugh.

I have been discussing this offline today, as a matter of fact. It seems critical thinking doesn't come along with choices many women make, no matter their religion, background, or culture. I was told "I am a muslim and I cover" then I go to see her pics, and she has tight jeans and a long sleeve shirt on in all the pics. Hm, I don't get it.

How can one claim God cares to judge a fornicator over judging a lying, conniving bully? I guess you would if you are the lying, conniving bully.

Quotes from the article:

"Four or five years ago there was a big change. It used to be here and there [that you would see] the hijab, but now almost everyone wears hijab … The people are beginning to be more religious," says Ms. Barakat of the region's growing religious identity after decades of in secular, pan-Arab themes.

"Girls want always a change, something to attract eyes of the young men so she wants to be different but still wear hijab," Barakat says.

Seems like there is a bit of confusion going on about the purpose of hijab.

The idea that hijab makes one "more religious" is preposterous on it's face, let alone when coupled with a statement about attracting the eyes of young men.

Agreed.

We saw girl at a nightclub in Alex bumpin and grindin away until she left the club. Outside we saw her all covered up with an abaya and higab, inside she had tight jeans and low cut top. My husband called her "haga".

You mean never mind about all that truth? How can the article be good when it's ridiculous?

I believe higab and modesty starts from the inside. I know it's gonna sound like I'm picking on the reverts here but many of them wear higab simply to play dress up. The girls in the tight clothing are wearing higab for one of two reasons...to look stylish or to get daddy of their backs. I would much prefer to see these girls without the higab than to watch them walk around in hypocracy. What's more modest...skin tight jeans and a tight top with a fancy higab or regular ol jeans and a simple, modest top without higab? I go for without the higab.

Question, what happens if said daughter doesn't want to wear higab at all?

And What if she wants to eat a BTL??

As a parent you put your foot down about things that your kid Can and Can not do.. And I would like to think that when little girls see mommy doing things.. they want to do it too.. it is their nature.. and if they are raised with certain beliefs/ actions.. god willing.. the kids will respect them growing up

The original intent behind wearing hijab, when adopted as an outward symbol of modesty in Islam, is just that. Modesty. It was never to be a point of attraction or adornment for any reason, but rather to dissuade it. If I am mistaken, I'm sure someone will correct me.

Just my 2 cents.

I think they look great and that this is their way of claiming a tradition thrust upon them as their own.

I don't think it's for any of us to judge why or why not someone chooses to wear the hijab. People should be allowed to have it mean whatever they want it to mean and express whatever they want it to express.

Why can't you allow people to have their own interpretations of things? It means more when you think something through yourself and decide to apply it as you see fit than sticking to one person's dogmatic view of what's right. I know some of you are convinced that you know what the correct true interpretation is of Islam, but there are millions of other people who are convinced of exactly the same thing and have come to different conclusions from yours.

Frankly, I don't care who wears hijab or why, but call it fashion, if that's why you're wearing it all fancy to attract attention, not a command from God. That's like Christian hookers wearing big bling crosses to advertise their street walking piety.

I don't think it's as simple as saying to each their own in this case simply because religion is involved. *Personally*, because I am not religious, I am not offended by however women would like to wear their hijab, or if they wear it at all, but if hijab actually held spiritual significance for me, then I might see it as an affront upon Islam. What if the new fashion was to start wearing lots of different funky colored rosary beads? Wouldn't Catholics find that inappropriate since it undermines the deeper meaning of the religious symbol?

Maybe when kids are very young they want to emulate their moms and dads but as they grow they tend to make their own choices. I've seen many women in higab walking beside teenage daughters not wearing one. Higab is not something you can force on someone, it's a personal choice. Sure I suppose you can force her to wear one until she's 18 but if she doesn't like it she'll just take it off when you're not looking. Wouldn't it be better to give her a choice?

About the BLT...my kids eat BLTs, made with turkey bacon. :D Food and higab are two different subjects.
