sod off about trolls just because someone makes a legitimate point in here once in a while. modesty: freedom from vanity or conceit.

1. the quality of being modest; freedom from vanity, boastfulness, etc.

2. regard for decency of behavior, speech, dress, etc.

3. simplicity; moderation.

why do women so persistently shoot themselves in the foot with this kind of stuff? free to be valued and prized for the content of their character and minds instead of physical appearance, they use what is supposed to be a refuge by wearing hijab to once again put physical appearance at the forefront. ugh.

Unfortunately many Egyptian/Arab girls do it for fashion reasons now. Have you seen the ones in the skin tight outfits with the fancy higab? What's the point of the higab?

I said this exact thing here when I first joined vj and got harrassed by a few choice members here.... but I agree with you!

I was thinking about this too. The "reason" for covering can easily become swallowed by the "coolness" of fashion. Moh has a teenaged sister who is into the tight clothes and layered hijab with the earring dangling from the side... much to his disgust. But you know, just try to reason with a teenager... ew.

well i do not agree with the skin tight hijabi thing.. BUT I would pick that anyday over what I see some of the teenagers wearing.. There is always a slight rebellion and acting out at those ages..

And not for nothing... the girls you see dressed like that are teens and maybe early 20's..

If I have a daughter that feels she need some sequins on her hijab to feel like a individual.. then go for it.. Or if she wants to twist up a couple hijabs into some crazy design to express some creativness Then Go for it..

Its hard enough still trying to get girls these days to still Cover.. The whole concept of hijab will mean more to them with maturity

Wow, looking at all of those women in their hijabs....just unbelievable! Maybe they should imitate our much more modest clothing we wear here in the US. Seriously guys was it that bad? I thought they looked nice.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

I believe higab and modesty starts from the inside. I know it's gonna sound like I'm picking on the reverts here but many of them wear higab simply to play dress up. The girls in the tight clothing are wearing higab for one of two reasons...to look stylish or to get daddy of their backs. I would much prefer to see these girls without the higab than to watch them walk around in hypocracy. What's more modest...skin tight jeans and a tight top with a fancy higab or regular ol jeans and a simple, modest top without higab? I go for without the higab.

Question, what happens if said daughter doesn't want to wear higab at all?

When I posted this article, I certainly never thought it would raise a contentious issue, I just simply thought about the many women in Cairo I saw wearing their scarves in such an elegant and nice way. I guess as a Christian with a Coptic fiancé, I never really looked at it as a religious issue, but I can see how a Muslim with concerns about modesty might view it differently, since obviously the women are causing attention to themselves with the detailed hijabs. Nevertheless, when I am in Egypt I always think hey these women really look nice and put-together and just wanted to post an article about it. It certainly was not intended as a comment on religion or anyone's lack thereof.
