I've just spoken with my flatmate in AKL. She is hopping mad. She is still in hospital, and it seems there is a 'conference' her Monday at 13:00 to determine her future. She is incandescent with rage even thinking that someone else should be in control of making that decision on her behalf.

Her nephew is involved, and quite likely in back of this, He wanted POA, and gave her quite a hard time about it over the holidays. He somehow has the idea that as his Mum is no longer with us, Aud has somehow become his responsibility. She refused to sign any such thing, and I can't say I disagree with her. He's a weasel, always was.  He is the only son of her recently deceased sister, a big-time lawyer (big fish, small pond)  and an utter toe-rag. He wants Aunty A. tucked up and out of his way, mostly for his own convenience, I believe.  The only other person involved is her son, who lives in AU, and for the most part, can't be bothered either.  She has also a daughter, who moved to the UK 30 years ago, and hasn't really had much to do with her Mum for over ten years.

She feels, and I can understand why, that they are trying to railroad her into care.  She is adamantly refusing to even consider that idea. She also feels that she has no one on her side, as she put it, and asked if I could speak on her behalf.  I don't know if they would even consider speaking to me as I am not family and certainly not local, but I've told her I would if they call.

And I am conflicted. On the one hand, I understand her flat refusal that she will go into care. For the most part, care homes in NZ are in an appalling state. She would have no choice either as to where or what area of the city she was placed. I very strongly feel that her state of mind would be badly affected by such a move. She's not the sort of person to be sat in a chair looking at the walls all day. Her mind is as sharp as it's ever been, and she is a very clever person. It's just that her body has let her down. She cannot be made to go against her will. Her home care will remain in place if she returns to her own house.

And on the other hand, I have concerns that she isn't managing well at home. Simple daily things she does on her own, making a cup of tea, is becoming more difficult. There is also this recent spate of falls and hospitalizations. Being in care certainly won't stop her from falling, the only difference is there at least perhaps she wouldn't have to wait for an ambulance to set her back up on her pins.  I am trying to work out my own motivation either way. I want her to carry on happily at home, with her things around her and her history club meetings and all, and yet she is a constant source of worry my end.  I feel so incredibly guilty at leaving the country and more or less abandoning her to her own devices. It is difficult to know what the heck to say, but I've got until midday Sunday to sort myself out.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Gosh, Eh ma'am... don't rip yourself up too badly, no ma'am.  You have your own life to live and lead, si ma'am.

Is it possible for her home to be made "safer" for her if she were to fall again, huh man?

Is there someone who could check in on her?  Or does "home care" encompass that, huh man?

The ultimate solution is "don't get old," sigh man.

Personally i think being around your own things is the way to go.  My grandma died peacefully at home, at 92.  She refused to go into care as well.  I think when there is little comfort in your life, you need the things that make you feel like you have some control.

Is there anyway to have home care make her home more appropriate for her? Like a bed on the main level or moving clutter?

Oh wow that's a hard place to be :(

I'm off the opinion that if she can get the support she needs then home is the place to be but if that level of home support isn't there then hard decisions have to be made.

It is in no way your fault, you have nothing to be feeling guilty about and I bet she'd be mad at you if she knew...

Keeping you both in my thoughts (hug)

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

Adding to Steve's flu report...

Yesterday I knew I wasn't feeling well but went into work for 4 hours before returning home. Slight fever, aches and pains, cough. I thought I'd do some work from home in the afternoon but my body went into complete shutdown. Couldn't sleep either, just lying on the couch/bed in pain. I had took the Mucinex cough syrup that supposedly deals with multiple symptoms but wasn't so good on the multiple part.

Finally I took an ibuprofen at 7 pm and I have no idea why that idea hadn't occurred to me earlier. Chills and aches and pains vanished in almost an instant. It truly is a miracle drug for me. Always has been. Headache, joint pain, you name it... ibuprofen knocks it out.

It might be just a 24 hour bug 'cause I'm feeling a lot better this morning, although I did take another ibuprofen at 3 AM so maybe it's still masking the true symptoms.

Meanwhile all of New Mexico is blanketed with new snow which is a neat trick considering the size of the state. Verizon and Century Link were down in the state for almost 24 hours. I heard the Century Link outage was nationwide. It'll be interesting to read the post mortem on that.

Happy Friday to everyone!
