Also if you have a US passport, you don't need a Canadian one anymore.

Don't tell me what I need, or don't need. When one passport is in the shop (being renewed, waiting for a visa, etc.) I need the other one. Also sometimes visas are cheaper for some nationalities.

Over 2 million lifetime miles flown, over 100,000 miles this year, I've got a pretty good handle on this passport stuff.

Thanks though.

I'm going to make my own visa and passport photos as I see fit. My photos always pass muster.

Do you guys think they will be fussy that the photo is 1/16 of an inch off?

you willing to gamble that they WONT?

i just dont see what the big deal is to go to a drugstore and pay $15 for a couple of passport photos.

when paul and i needed them, we waited till one of his trips here, and went to the drugstore and had both ours taken. boom. done. when he needs the canadian size ones for his medical and interview, hell do the same up there.

its not like $15 is a lot of money or that drug stores keep inconvenient hours.

I did go to Walmart photo centre and INSISTED on the specs. They kept blowing me off and saying it was standard US passport. I measured and it was still a sixteenth short from the bottom to the eyes. Argh.

I (beneficiary) had mine taken here in Brazil, and sent the photo file to my fiancé by e-mail.

He, on the other hand, took his own photo using a passport photo app (so, basically, a selfie).

He then printed both photos at Walmart on glossy paper, and wrote our names on the back.

We were approved with no RFEs after 178 days. Maybe we were lucky.

Precisely.

Not luck. A pattern.

You're from Canada, so this may not be the case for you, but for those of us whose partner is farther away or from somewhere with less reliable or more expensive mail... the fastest (and most efficient, and what we did) is to get the image file from whoever took the picture, and then have it printed here (if you've got a photo printer and photo paper at home, that's fine, otherwise you can use an online photo print service or a store; I had my fiancee's pictures printed at Walmart.com because they were the first place I found that had a native passport-style picture option; cost $8, was ready for pick up in an hour).

Thank you for this credible response. It seemed a bit silly to have my fiance in Australia pay $50 to express ship a passport photo with an original signature and printed name. I've been trying to figure out if this is exactly what needed to be done. However, after reading your first hand experience,  time and money will be saved knowing I can just have him email me a passport style photo. And then I print it out professionally somewhere and lastly I write his name on the back of the photo. Thanks again!

Self printed both photos (transmitted digitally) and letters of intent. No issues. Those photos are really not used for anything of relevance. For the purposes of eventual visa, they will ask for more photos delivered to them in person during the interview. The only times I've heard about RFE due to passport photos was when they were missing, or badly damaged.
