So I went through my documents and it's my fault.  My business expenses took a chunk out of my AGI.  I think I misinterpreted a question on the I864.  My sponsor is completing forms now.  I'm submitting in the morning and I hope they'll review it quickly... 😕

Best of luck to you. We’re hoping everything goes well and swiftly for you!

Good luck.  AGI is for 1040EZ filers.  Line 22 (Total Income) is what they consider your "income" from a 1040 form.

Hi everyone!

So, we received a temporary denial today at the interview.  The consular officer stated that I need a joint sponsor.  The thing is, I make twice what the minimum is for my family size.  I don't understand it.  Apparently, I efficiently front loaded our information and the officer didn't ask for much except to see our pictures.

Has anyone else gone through this?

Why isn't my income sufficient?

After I submit the joint sponsor, how long will it take for them to review (I'm planning to submit the sponsor information tomorrow at the latest)?

The officer kept the passports- is that a good sign?

I'm slightly devastated.  I sent my current job salary information back to them and asked additional questions.  I don't know if they'll respond though.

My visa was approved and i also had a low income for 2017 due to me moving back to usa and working less than quarter of the year i did not meet the poverty level. I did not use a joint sponser but was approved. I used my bank account which was more than the 5x requirement of the poverty level. I also showed all my pay stubs for 2018 and scanned them to the nvc website to show i was well above the poverty limit for 2018 and during the interview i stated that and no problems also stated my job and that i also work for the special area of the government they also requested to see my work ID so maybe that helped a bit not sure.

Yes.  Line 22 is "total income".  Note the parenthesis around mention of adjusted gross income if using the 1040EZ.  😉

Like I said, I know what the issue is now.  I sent my transcripts, not either form they referred to, and somehow missed it.

Yeah, they didn't take into account that my new position is well over the limit.  I guess NVC thought it was fine because we didn't receive any checklists or anything.

Thank you!  They gave him the domestic violence panel and didn't say he needs to schedule another interview, so... we shall see.

Did you send the WHOLE tax return or just the first couple of pages (summary)?   I initially sent just the "summary" and received an RFE on "income".  I then sent the entire tax return with a letter of explanation.  I'm a business owner so I have Business income and Personal income.   They approved after the 2nd set of documents I sent.   PS - make sure you send CURRENT year income verification (2018).  A tax return shows income for 2017.

I sent in my transcripts with my W2s for the past 3 years along with my current job information and pay stubs up to the point before I sent my package to the NVC.  It was my fault.

Yes, less than a year. I think they looked at net, maybe?

It's just a guess from my end, but I wonder sometimes if they take that into account, since they ask for prior tax returns in addition to the current/recent ones. That may have been the case in your situation, if everything else was fine.

Håll ut, y'all.

It was the AGI- I didn't file 1040EZ, so I misinterpreted the form when I read the statement about the AGI.

Its also good advice to everyone here. Never trust the US government even if your documents clear doesnt mean anything to them you have to always approach each case as though you are a guilty party and prove you are right.  And i believe nvc doesnt give a checklist anymore during my interview they didnt have any checklist and my spouse had a double interview once in her language and once in english. They went through things not even listed nor scanned in the nvc page. But we were approved on the spot. I saw other cases get rejected for much worse than your case while i was waiting. They did interviews in the open so i wouldnt worry too much most cases clear and if you dont pass you can always contest any rejection within a time limit so dont worry it will just cost you more time and some letter writing to get things cleared

NVC only does an initial review of the I-864. If you meet the minimum requirements to file an I-864, then that usually suffices for them. The CO makes a public charge decision based on the totality of the circumstances, which is more than just meeting the minimums.
