Why are statues being removed?

Charlottesville, Dallas, New Orleans, Baltimore... these are some of the places where statues of Lee are being taken down.  Why is this happening?  The Civil War happened.  It is part of our country’s history.  Grant and Lee existed.  Why are we allowing people to try and remove them from our history, our memories?

Should we be expecting mt Rushmore to be removed? Monticello removed from our money? Slaveholding white founding fathers to be removed from our school texts?

Statues are removed because the people want them removed. States, cities, towns.. can all make those decisions for themselves if they find it prudent. In general we make statues to people that are deserving of heroism and reflection, not people that are symbols of sedition. That being said there are more appropriate places the subject matter belongs that can be 'reflected upon' or 'celebrated' appropriately, such as historical museums and battlefield museums.

 

I do not have issue with having such statues in a museum appropriate context or on private property.

Sedition?  That’s funny.  This country was FOUNDED on the premise of sedition, was it not?  Freedom from tyranny for one man is sedition to another.

The point is, it happened.  Lee stayed loyal to his home state of Virginia, and he was an honorable man.  To many, a hero.  Sadly, too many idiots are in charge today that are allowing these statues to be removed all around us.  “Snowflakes” is too kind of a word.  The statues never hurt me growing up, and would never hurt anyone today.  Ridiculous.

Getting out from under the tyranny of the Brits was a great accomplishment for the US at the time.  Why in the WORLD would anyone want to honor a statue of a redcoat in the US?  It would be about as welcome as one of these:

I’ve been on the right track all along.  And this removal of statues is stupid.  Soon, we will see statues of Kaepernick erected to replace them.  Give me a break...

I’m chiming in on this one.....

 I will try to explain it here, the same way I explained it to my 72 year old father that asked me (as his 46 year old.....more liberal daughter) why the statues were being removed.

Now, make no mistake, I consider myself a true southern woman....my southern linage has a  few confederate generals and more “fighters against the northern aggression” than I can name (as embarrassing as that is). I was born and raised in the south and I am a proud southern woman.

Here’s my two cents.....these statues have no place being out on a public square or in a park or public institution.....they are a dark reminder of a history that was not kind to anyone that wasn’t white. 

 

My father argued “well, it’s history, this is our past”. 

 

That argument is absolutely true. It is history. It is the past. It should be remembered. Because it is what it was.

 

My argument is.....that is not what those statues are seen as today....they are not seen as the “past”....they are seen as a rallying point for “white power”, as a gathering point for the kkk and other neo nazi groups.

 

The statues today are not seen as history....they are seen as symbols.

 

 I am a white, middle aged woman, from the south.....I pass by libraries, streets, public schools, monuments, and businesses everyday that have some reference to the civil war, generals of that war, battles of the war.....does it bother me? Absolutely not....I never think anything of it......the question is.....would it bother me if I wasn’t white....

I have visited many of the battlefield sites around NC, SC and GA and not once has the thought crossed my mind that the union troops were giving a good kicking to the white supremacists. I have yet to see anyone rallying around any of the different statues that I have seen. Most of the south is scattered with hundreds of sites marking different parts of the civil war. They are not celebrating slavery, they show what happened and why it happened and that it should never happen again.

 

I just think it's a slippery slope and what about one day when someone objects to all the different 9/11 memorials?
