CA Drivers License for new GC holder: I-94 still necessary?

Dear all,

 

I am absolutely not sure where to post this BUT I am wondering, is anyone familiar with getting your CA Drivers License after immigration?

 

Is the GC enough or do I also have to show my I-94? And how does the I-94 look like? I have never seen a copy and the printed out summary page from the government side looks very "unofficial".

 

I have a German drivers license but not sure if that counts for anything in CA. I also have an expired Ohio drivers license. Will I have to take the written AND the driving test or just the written test?

Green card should be enough. I believe you will need to take your social security card as well.  

 

You will be required to take the written test for sure... I am not sure about the driving test.

You will need to do the driving test, too.  California does not have a reciprocity agreement with Germany.

 

Don’t worry, though...it’s barely even a test, it’s ridiculous - hence why we have so many bad drivers here.

Tips: Make sure the car you drive for the test has all lights and parts working. Make sure it is registered in California (you can do this before your test). Make sure it has California liability/collision insurance. Make sure you are driven to the test by a licensed, insured California driver.
