Any more data points here? Has anyone actually received the official copy after the courtesy copy? We got the courtesy copy in August but have not gotten an official copy.

I wonder if the courtesy copy PLUS the original filing receipts and 12 month extension would work for re-entry. I understand there are risks but I wonder if anyone here can provide a data point one way or the other.

I got a letter saying that if I got the wrong extension letter (courtesy letter) to send it to them and point out what was wrong with it. Haven't had time to do it yet, keep forgetting to do it.

It also says that receipt must be issued within the previous 6 months :)  But yes, I suspect that the plain white form won't work.

This 6 month thing is scaring me. Anyone know what it really means?

It does not really pertain to you when you have an official extension letter with you. When entering on an expired green card (2 year version) your official extension letter becomes the document that gives you the new expiration date (18 months for the new one). It basically means you use the extension letter as proof of legal status and the green card as a way to identify yourself, showing that letter belongs to you. The whole 6 month thing is now a non-issue.

I posted in "Traveling with Extension Letter" thread about my experience at Dubai Airport where they scrutinized both my official (which I received through my attorney) and courtesy Extension Letters and was told both papers were not good for travel. That they were scanned/photocopied, and not official documents. They called CBP in LAX who cleared me to board the flight.

Back in LAX, I related the incidents to the immigration officer (after he had run through my passport and scanned my fingerprints). He said I am able to travel with my courtesy notice, and he said that those people should be concerned with the validity of the passport and not those Letters. When I first presented both letters to him, his remark was "Don't tell me you are in trouble?". I told him I was on ROC and he looked at the papers, and said Oh Yeah.

I don't know whether what that immigration officer said about ability to travel with courtesy extension letter is an official policy, or it just depends on which officer (and what his/her mood is on that day) you happen to get.

It's interesting that you were told you could travel on it when it specifically says on the letter is not an official letter and therefore not a travel document. Plus USCIS has asked for the courtesy letters to be returned.

Did I miss something here? when were we asked to return the courtesy copy?

I recieved a letter a while back from USCIS saying that they were aware some people have gotten a courtesy letter saying their original letter has been sent to an attorney even when they don't have one. They asked for the courtesy letter back and information about what was wrong with the courtesy letter.

It seems hit or miss if most people got the "please return letter". The only thing we got was the official extension, but it did not mention returning the 18 month copy and that solely that some had been sent incorrectly.

Never noticed that request, guess I look at it when I get around to it.

I have finally gotten around to writing a response to be mailed out tomorrow. Didn't feel super urgent as my 12 month is still valid.

Was this a separate notice or was this included on the official 18 month extension?

I have not recieved the 18 month extension. Just the courtesy letter and then later on a letter asking for me to return it.

Ahh okay.

So it seems that not everyone received a letter to return the original 18 month then.
