I will be scheduled for an immigrant interview soon to join my wife. Can someone share their experience on what goes on it there with me?

Although I was never interviewed for CR1 and I am not from Ghana but as here are my 2 cents

  • Petitioner may be allowed to come to the interview but he/she must keep a distance (remained seated while they are interviewing the beneficiary). It is almost always that they do not ask the petitioner. If they want to, they probably schedule another interview (and this can be a bad sign).  However, having petitioner there should always help :)  in case of K1 or CR-1
  • Normally, it is very quick - could be a few minutes to 20-30 min at most.
  • The interviewer (normally accomplished with interpreter) is very professional and he/she is trained to detect sign of issues: be honest and if beneficiary does not know  just say "No, I don't know" and explain the reason if allowed to.
  • The questions can be specified and personal but they are supposed to be but well-communicated couple should have no problem answering these questions: beneficiary should know past, present, and future plan of his/her petitioner :)
  • Prepare the paperwork and additional evidences (sometimes they ask, sometimes they don't but it is good to have things ready), organize them in the way that beneficiary can find/locate thing quickly.

You have to prepare yourself and proper documentation to prove your legitimate marriage.Your marriage certificate, pictures, calls history and any other documents relating to your marriage and you can also add her plane ticket to your documents if she visited you before. The C.Os questions you are going to answer is base on the information your wife provided so nobody can tell you the questions.

I would highly recommend you look through the consulate reviews for Ghana on this site. It is not an easy embassy to get through and unforunately the COs don't always play by the same rules as other embassies. The reviews will give you an idea of what kind of questions they could ask.

If the petitioner is in the country for the interview, they will not be allowed inside. They will be required to stay outside the embassy until the beneficiary is done with the interview.

The CO can ask normal questions like how you met, what your spouse does for work, etc. They can also ask very random questions to test you. Only two of the questions my husband was asked during his CR1 interview had anything to do with me. All the rest came from evidence we submitted during the USCIS phase....including his counsin's address in Oregon...three times. So I would recommend you know about all the evidence that has been submitted before the interview...believe me they will review it....as well as know about everything you are taking to the interview. Make sure you know everything about your spouse. With this embassy nothing is off limits.

Best of luck! And prepare well. Not to scare you but the interview can make or break the visa process.
