Hello everybody,

I apologize if these questions have been discussed somewhere else.

I am inviting my mom to visit me and my domestic partner is signing the affidavit of support.

I am planning to write an invitation letter addressed to embassy. I read that since my partner is sponsoring my mom's trip I have to write the letter from both of us.

Should I write separate letters from both of us? Should I write a letter from me mentioning that my partner is inviting her also?

I would appreciate a sample if anybody has a similar letter.

I understand that all the papers from me should be in original forms. Due to lack of time I am thinking to email all the documents and my mom would print them out.

Do you think it would be acceptable at the embassy?

Thank you for finding the time to reply to my answers. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Where did you read that you have to write a letter? It is highly inaccurate.

This is a common misconception of visitor visas. There is no sponsorship of visitor visas. Invitation letters are not needed and do not help. The applicant who is applying must file on their own and under their own merits. There is nothing you do to help them get approved. Your mother simply applies and she should bring evidence of ties to her home country. Remember, the CO is only interested on why your mother must return to her country, not why she wants to visit the US. The CO wants to be sure that your mother doesn't eventually overstay her visa to live with you. That is why those documents you want to send may end up hurting your mother's case instead of helping. If you send documents stating that you will pay for this and that and provide your mother with a place to stay, then it will look like your mother will have a higher chance of using her visa to move here with you.

If you do decide to provide a letter for your own satisfaction. It will likely not even be looked at by the CO.

There is a question in DS 160 asking who will sponsor your trip. My mom is retired and has means to live in her country. It would make sense that my partner will pay for the trip since he is making enough money. I would not let my mom pay for the tickets, etc. Her pension is not comparable with american social security pension.

I am going to write an invitation letter addressed to consulate to explain our particular family situation and why i invite my mom to visit.

I agree that nothing would make a difference if an officer has made his/her mind.

Thank you for the answers.

Yes, we understand your reasoning. But we are just letting you know the process. Things like Affidavit of Support that you mentioned in your initial post are official legal documents. Affidavits are not required for visitor visas. There is a difference of someone paying for a trip like you want to do and someone who is legally bond to support a person via a legal affidavit. Hence, the reason we informed you of such difference.

You are certainly free to provide an invitation letter for your mother. But the result we commonly see is the CO not even wanting to see it.

Let us know how it goes.

That mind change took all of 26 minutes.

You can certainly write letters or affidavits of support, but 99 percent of the time they're not looked at during the 3-4 minutes the applicant spends at the interview window.

Affidavit of support is not used for tourist visas.

Guys, thank you very much for your replies.

The other immigration forum I searched mentions very stringent process of preparing documentations even for a visitor visa.

I know an interview for a B2 visa is quick and usually without going into much details. I am still thinking how thorough I should be gathering all supportive documentation. I don't want to fill 8 page affidavit... Invitation letter to consulate in English explaining your particular family circumstances is not a bad idea. I am not sure how well immigration officers understand Russian.

English is my second language so I am doing the best I can posting here.

My original questions have not been answered though...

Thank you for participating in the discussion.

Your questions have not been answered here because they are based on incorrect information.

This is taken directly from the DOS: (https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/tourism-visit/visitor.html

"Note: Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant's residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa."

You are free to send whatever supporting documentation you wish to send, although as noted above, it is not required.  Nor are consular staff required to look at it.  There is no sponsoring of applicants for tourist visas.  Your mother will be denied or approved based on the totality of her circumstances.

They have Russian-speaking staff at the US consulate in Russia.

Jorgedig, thank you for the information. I won't bother with the affidavit.

The other forum is ***removed***. Their list of supporting documents for B2 visa is exhausting.

You can look up the forum by googling "immigration forum". They are on the 1st page

Yes, we are aware of that particular site. It is notorious for pushing such unnecessary steps for obtaining nonimmigrant visas. There is a reason it's name is blocked on this site.

Apparently owned by a International Travel Insurance company that caters heavily to Indian nationals.
