N-400 memberships question and ex-communist countries

I was born in a communist country and the system collapsed in 1990 when I was 14. I have never been affiliated with the Communist party but as a child I was a member of "pioneers", a youth movement that was not affiliated with the Party either (although it shared much of the ideology, it was more of a civic patriotic movement). The membership was mandatory for every child of 7 or older. In the I-485 I did not list this membership because the form was only asking about affiliations after 16 years of age. I answered NO to the Communist Party membership or affiliation too.

But in N-400 the question ALL memberships should be listed, regardless of age. So I intend to list this one too (with approximate dates). The Communist Party question in N-400 is also much broader, asking for any association (direct or indirect) with the Party. That's super-vague. I plan to answer NO and submit a separate sheet explaining my childhood membership in the "pioneers". I also intend to explain the same at the interview. Would this make sense?  Thanks!

Agree that you are overthinking, I was from communist country (Vietnam) and Vietnam is still a communist countries with some mix mode and I had no problem getting my USC.  Most schoolchild kids in Vietnam were required to be with a  young "union" group which might be indirectly controlled by communists.

Out of curiosity, did you report the young communist membership on your N400?

No and it was not a lie because it was not officially a communist party.

That makes sense to me.  It's hard to imagine that the question is intended to suss out the "political" affiliations of 7-year olds.

Just to ease your mind that USCIS some times can be forgiven (just do not  test this):  when I was taking my oath for my USC, others and I were given a sheet to answers a few questions like from the time of the interview until this oath ceremony

  • Have you ever claimed you are a USCIS?
  • Have you voted?

Many people who could read fluently, marked yes. The filed officers just indirectly told them to rethink :)

Thank you all for answering! Yeah, the attorneys I asked also agree. I'll answer NO for Communist party association and add elaboration. The movement, alas, still needs to be listed under "memberships" on N-400 as there is no young age limit for that question. And, yeah, I find it a bit silly having to discuss politics of my 7-year-old self (I don't remember even knowing what Communism was, it was like gravity there). The movement was a ceremonial and civic/patriotic kinda organization that made us sing idiotic songs - that's all I remember :)
