Firing someone for thinking your a ####### would be grounds for unfair dismissal. Have a word about wasting company time and resources, explain that you don't appreciate that they went behind you to do it, and that should they have any issues to come and speak to you personally.

If they mention that you shouldn't have been looking in the first place, explain that you are the boss and you are in charge of all the lands you can see :P if they don't like it, McDonalds is hiring.

I have been thinking ( I know very dangerous thing to do) but why would you talk about your boss on a company computer, to my thinking that is a bit of a silly thing to do. You said you knew this other person since kindergarten so why could you not of phoned them with the inquiry? You did yourself a disservice, and to my way of thinking it was a bit childish. I am assuming your boss is quite a nice boss otherwise yes you would of been sacked by now. This sort of thing happens and I am just saying be a little more careful in future.

Let's say you are a boss. Let's say your employee works from home using this software that allows the employee to access his computer from home. While accessing this computer from home, if this employee's monitor is not turned off....everyone in the office can see what the employee is doing at any point in time.

Now let's say that you, the boss, went looking for something at the employee's desk, and while there, noticed that not only was the monitor on, but that you could view that the employee was typing an email to another employee b!tchin' about you........:blink::blink:

Would you say anything to the employee? Would you fire the employee?

What would you do?

This is why, in any business where you have employees working on PC's, you have them fill out a few forms:) One form would be an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) regarding company files, files/software/ideas created by you while under the contract of employment etc.

Another would be an AUP - Acceptable Use Policy. This form would state, during the hours of employment you may not use company time, or company resources to send personal emails, perverted jokes, browse the internet, look at porn, access chat programs etc.

I must say, it confuses me. How could someone's home PC be monitored by an employer, unless the knowingly installed software on their PC, knowingly turned it on, and knowingly allowed it to remain on (therefore there own stupid fault!) But maybe I'm over thinking the question :P At any rate, I would get them to sign an AUP, warn them not to waste company time and resources, and that's that. I'd also remember comeChristmas bonus time, that said employee is a tool :P

Were you using company email to do said bitching? That's a definite no no. Company email can be accessed by the company anytime. If I have a beef about something I do my bitching via IM or a private chat during smoke breaks.

Or you could go one better and not gossip/gripe at work. The occasional gripe/scrap of goss is OK, but it's so easy to get sucked into a company's or a team's politics and I just don't want to do that because it always bites me in the a$$.

I don't write anything in a company e-mail that I wouldn't feel comfortable having read to the entire team, or put up on the company's intranet site. On the other hand, I don't want to be spied on constantly either. I think there needs to be a balance.

I agree, I never use company email for anything other than work related business.

Work related gossip can bite one in the ####### BIG TIME. Our office is 95% female so it's usually gossip central. I very rarely get involved in it (I don't mind hearing it though  ). I do, however, have the occasional complaint.

Excellent policy! I don't even give my work address out to people...cuts down on the risk of getting spam/inappropriate stuff in my inbox.

Yep...that's the way to go. At this job I've made a conscious effort to stay out of office politics and my working environment has been much more pleasant as a result. The fact that I had a good boss didn't hurt either. Since I'm on contract it's easier to stay out of office politics since people don't even try to pressure you to get involved.

ITA.

If you are on your company's network, everything you do can be tracked. IMs/PMs, emails, etc. And because it is their network, they have a right to see it....I wouldn't call that spying at all.

Wait til you're home on your own IP, talk in person, or use the phone. Company email to gripe abou the boss is honestly quite a silly thing to do and just begging to get caught.

Always assume you are being watched . Just wait until you are home on your own PC and network, or if you just have to do it,develop some sort of a code. Personally I'd just save it until I was home.

I agree. Depending on the severity of your smack-talk, I would say you're deffo on the radar now...so act as if you are being evaluated & do every task to perfection!
