July 6, 2018:  I-751 interview scheduled

August 9, 2018:  I-751 and N-400 combo interviewed

August 13, 2018:  Case was transferred to National Benefits Center

Sept 14, 2018:  Oath Ceremony will be schedule.  New Card Is Being Produced

As you can see, after we filed I-751 in April 12, 2017 we have not heard anything from them since biometrics and my 2 year green card was about to expired.  In April, we made an info pass appointment to have I-551 stamp on my passport because I planned to travel out of country.  I asked the officer about N-400 filing.  He said: "go ahead if you are qualified.  We will pull your pending I-751 and N-400 to process together.  I could not believe my shelf how quick they handled the case after I filed N-400.  Anyway, they sent out 2 letters for interview appointment.  One was on Agu 9 for I-751.  Another one was on Aug 10 for I-400.

INTERVIEW DAY:  The officer came and call my name.  My husband and I followed him to his office.  There he asked both of us to raise hand to tell the truth.  He then looked at his computer and said "you also have an interview for N-400 for tomorrow.  Do you have that invitation letter with you?"   We gave it to him.  He said he would do both interview today.  The first interview was I-751.  Nothing is complicated.  He asked simple questions:

1.  How do you know each other?

2.  Where did you meet for the first time?

3.  What is your name?  Birthday?

4.  Where do you work, live?

He pointed to my husband and asked me : what is his name?  His birthday?

Then, he turned to my husband asked:  Have you met his family?

Guys, these questions are very simple, but if you messed up, that will cause delay and headache.   ( a couple  who are my friends, messed up the year they met when answering, their case was called for second interview) Those questions were exactly the same questions when we file I-751.  He had those documents right in the front of him and checked mark every single one when we answered.  They have to be matched well, no conflicts.

The officer then asked me if we have anything else to show him today.  My husband gave him the whole folder of documents (banks, mortgage, investment accounts, life insurance)  He flipped through and gave us back.  then he pull out a letter my mother in law wrote that we submitted along with I-751 and asked me who wrote that letter?  and what is her name?  (before the interview, my husband told me if they asked anything about family members, make sure to use the word "in-law" for example:  my mother in law in stead of his mother.)  When I answered that was my mother in law.  The officer nodded his head and said "very nice"  The I-751 interview was done.  He recommended for approval.   The waiting period about 30 to 120 days for final decision.  He then ask my husband to leave and wait in the waiting area.  The N-400 interview began.  Again, very simple questions, mostly yes/no questions that we already answered in N-400 application.  I passed the civil test, and citizen test.  He told me because I-751 has to be approved before N-400, He can't make decision today.  He told me to wait out side.  15 minutes later, he came out with a document letter like with 3 signatures on it, certified mark. he said "we probably will not send you green card because you do not need it.  On Oath Ceremony day, bring this letter instead.  This is very important.  you MUST hand this in on oath ceremony day.  Don't loose it."

A few days after the interview, we got email saying that our case was transferred to National Benefits Center.  Exactly one month since transfer, the approval notification arrived.

Hope this writing have some information you may want to know.  If you are qualified for N-400, go for it.  Hope you all have approval letters soon.

First of all Congratulations..

My little question is, after you filled N-400, how many months did it says it would take to complete your application? I just filled N-400 yesterday and it says estimated time is 11 months.

Thank you

Johnny/Theresa:

After N-400 filed, the online status estimated time was 9 months.  It estimated the case will be completed March 2019.  As you notice, USCIS online status is not reliable.  When my I-751 filed, it said about 6 to 10 months, but it last way beyond that time line until N-400 filed

Greetings! I became a permanent resident in 2017 then I applied for condition removal 2 years later and my I-751 is still pending but I got and 18 months extension on my greencard. This year (2020) I filed N-400 because I'm eligible. It looks like I will have to wait for about 2 years before my naturalization interview so I wonder if there's a way for me to travel overseas with expired green card and my 18 months extension is over too. I really need to visit my parents and my grandmom. I would appreciate any information on this.

You need to request an infopass appointment, where you can get an I-551 stamp in your passport. This will allow you to travel and is proof of your legal status.

I think with the condition of things, Info pass is for emergency purposes only. He will need to speak with a tier 2 officer to see if they can schedule him for an info pass at his/her field office.
