The USCIS office should have taken your expired Green Card when you were issued the I-551 stamp in your passport.  I can't help you with Nigeria, but I can let you know how we did with i-551 Stamps.  We traveled to the Dominican Republic (mother and two daughters) with I-551 stamps during June - Aug.  No issues whatsoever at the airport ticket counters and gates going and coming.  No issues with the Dominican Immigrations Officer departing the Dominican Republic.  However, upon returning to the U.S. via Miami International airport, the CBP Officer at the booth referred us to the dreaded CBP back office where an officer ran additional computer checks which took about an hour.  (Had to go to the back office last year with the 12-month extension letters too.). Aside from the brief delay at Miami upon returning, smooth sailing.

Incidentally, none of the Passport Kiosks, returning to the U.S., can read an I-551 Stamp in your passport, so skip all the kiosk lines and go directly to the CBP Officer at the booth stations (with the long lines).

Thanks so much for this detailed explanation and advice. It helps.

They didn’t take the green card from me when I went for the i-551 stamp. The officer returned both green card and extension letter back to me.

You shouldn’t have any problem. If you still have your expired green card, make sure you take that with you.

Thanks so much for the advice.
