Hello,

I recently moved from Canada to Hawaii (K1). I married my fiance shortly after entering the country. I waited 2+ weeks before applying for my SSN. When I visited one office, they said they had no record of me entering the country. To be honest, the lady assisting me wasn't very knowledgeable about the about K1. She said she would have to send my file to California and it would be another 5-6 weeks before I could get my SSN. My husband and I are decided to try another office instead so we left that small office and went to the main one in Honolulu. I provided the admin person with my passport and marriage license. He said he didn't need to see my I94. I was then given the following letter: " This is to acknowledge that you applied for a social security number on x day. Before we can issue you a social security number card, we must verify the documents you gave us to show your alien status with the federal, state or local office in the United States that issued the documents. This may take up to 4 weeks. If that office verifies the authenticity of your documents, we will mail you a social security number card. If that office does not verify your documents you are not eligible for social security number card and we will inform you of this in writing. If you are not a US citizen and you were applying for social security number card for employment purposes and your immigration status allows you to work you may legally begin employment while you are await issuance of a social security card. You cannot work if your immigration status does not authorize you to do so."

Is this the standard letter every K1 person receives or are they doing manual verification? This letter says 4 weeks.... Any ideas?

Not every K1 gets it but they give it when they can't verify your status.

Did you take a copy of your I-94 to show your status? did you try checking your own status online?

Did you change your last name? - as the name at the entry would be different this can cause a mismatch too.

Apart from the possible reasons (and these may not be reasons at all), it happens in some cases. They resolve it themselves, so all you need to do is wait for them to send you another letter saying they verified you and then in a few days you'll receive your card too, unless another problem occurs.

Hi! Thanks for your response. I did all these things but i still got this letter. Maybe it was because I cleared US customs in Vancouver Canada before heading straight to Hawaii....??? Or maybe Hawaii is just different? Or could be just me? Hopefully I get that SSN soon-ish. 🤞 Thanks again

It has nothing to do with you. I did every single of these steps, and applied before marriage and name change but I still need to go through this too.

In my case , I am pretty sure it is because of my middle name not appearing on my I-94 was the problem.

I got mine in 3 weeks.

On the other hand you can check this verification status through USCIS SAVE case status check.

normally you can check it from here: (however, USCIS case checks are not working at the moment - for about 3 hours so far) so you can check later.

https://www.uscis.gov/save/casecheck

checking this status won't make much difference because you cannot do anything with it, but at least you will know it is in process.

I am having the same issue here. Came in LA on 8/30 and went to social security office this morning, thinking I should be able to apply for one. However I got the exactly same letter as yours.

Nothing I can do at the moment, i will just wait maybe for 2 weeks, and will constantly checking SAVE website.

Hey @Naes, I was about to send you a message this afternoon and ask you about this. Luckily I found you  here with answers :)

We have the same situation. I applied for a Social Security Number after we got married.. August 14, 2018 when I applied for a SSN and I also received the same letter, the lady assisting us told me that it will take about 4 weeks to received my ss card, but on September 11 she called me and told me that she received a notification from the Department of Homeland Security that they are having a hard time verifying my documents which is the K1 and I may need to go to the nearest US Immigration near me but I cant set an appointment so I tried calling USCIS and they transfer my call to the Immigration Officer and I told him my situation and he ask me if I already send my application for adjustment of status and I told him I haven’t send it because we are actually waiting for my ssn before I send it but he told me that I need to send the AOS first then after my EAD was approved then thats the time they will send me my ss card.

I also applied for one on 27th of August. 2 days after my arrival. I’m yet to receive one. Checked the Ceac website @Naes posted now and it said it was verified with a tick logo and that it was returned to SSA agency. Let’s see this new week. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since I applied for one.

Yeah it looks like they’re done confirming the case, I’d expect a letter in a week or so. And it usually followed by the ssn.

Thank you. We’ll be on the look out.

I married my fiance August 30th (2 weeks after entering the US.I applied for my SSN on the September 7th using my new, married last name.  I just looked up my case on the SAVE database and my case was verified this morning (September 21th).Should I have applied for my AOS at the same time? Or is it possible to get a SSN before AOS?
