Hello Y'all,

My wife and I won the GC lottery and moved to the US 6 months ago. We've found an apartment a month later and filed a Change of Address on USCIS's website. A few days later, USCIS delivered our GCs. About 3 weeks later, USPS reported that our GCs are undeliverable (they accidentally tried to deliver the GCs to our former mailing address). About 2 weeks later,  I called USPS and they told me I should try to physically get to the branch that had the mail. I went there and they didn't find it and asked me to leave my number and they'll call me back. They didn't call so I called them a few days later and they claimed that the mail is lost. In the meantime, the status on the USPS website changed to "Critical" (or something like that). Two months ago, I submitted a "Find Missing Mail" request at the USPS website but didn't get a response yet.

I asked USCIS on their website and they suggested me to file the I-90 form which going to cost me about $900 on USPS's mistake (and that's even delivered as Priority Mail with $100 insurance and I don't know if it means anything).

Anyway, now the status on USPS is something like "Label Created, not yet in system" for both tracking numbers. I've heard that it may take about 7 months to get new GCs even if I submit the I-90 form. Our I-551 is going to be valid until March 2019. I am also looking for a new job and not sure if the lack of GC can create problems or make the process harder.

So basically, I'd be happy to hear what are my options from your experience before I run to pay the $900 for new GCs.

Thank you in advance!

P.S.

The status on USCIS website for both cases is "Card Was Determined As Undeliverable By The Post Office". And the description contains this line "Please go to www.uscis.gov/e-request to request that we resend the card to you." (I contacted them through this address and they responded with a suggestion to fill I-90). Does it mean anything at all?

Hi! I’m so sorry this happened! This happened to us too! We were 19 and 21 so broke and had to come up with the money to pay for his card again. It sucked!

However, usps said that they did deliver the mail to my box. I highly doubt it but I couldn’t get them to change their minds or do anything about it.

Sorry 😪

@geowrian: Does OP qualify for reason "(B) My previous card was issued but never received," thus no need to pay I-90 fee; https://www.uscis.gov/i-90:

Quote

If you are filing Form I-90 because you never received your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), you do not have to pay a filing fee as long as you meet these criteria:

  • We mailed the card over 30 days ago;
  • It was returned to us as undeliverable; and
  • You have not moved from the address you provided us.

However, you must submit:

  1. A copy of the Form I-797, Notice of Action, for the form that USCIS approved to grant your Permanent Resident Card; for example, Form I-485, Form I-751, Form I-829, or Form I-90;
  2. A copy of government-issued identification that contains your name, date of birth, photograph and signature.

What would they submit for bullet point #1; confirmation of payment for the USCIS Immigrant Fee?

Or must they pay $1080 ($540 x2) for reason "(A) My card has been lost, stolen, or destroyed"?
