I opened the joint account with US bank. The bank office said they did require ssn to open an account, but I told him I would apply ssn in the next couple of days. He modified something in the system and I was allowed to open an account. I need to give my ssn to the bank once I get it.

Do you think they might open an individual account for me or it has to be joint because my wife will be presenting her own SSN and they use that to cover me? I really need a personal bank for myself. ☹️

US bank told me he can only open a joint account without my ssn. If you have already applied ssn, it wouldn’t take long for you to receive it. Maybe 2 weeks? Is it ok for u to wait for 2 weeks?

A marriage license is different from a marriage certificate. A marriage license is only a document allowing you to get married, it doesn’t say you’re married on it. A marriage certificate is post wedding showing you that you have officially and legally become married. In order to fulfill the requirements of K1 AOS you must prove that you are legally married which means you need a marriage certificate and not a license. Wait for the certificate in the mail to submit the package. If you submit with a license or without anything you risk a denial.

In California it is called “license and certificate of marriage” because they use the same paper after registration. It is not a marriage license after you register it, it becomes a certificate. (They just copy it in the official vital record paper and certify it)

What the OP is asking is if he can use a “customer copy” which is not the official certified copy but more like a purchase copy. You receive it after registering your marriage in this area.

Hmmm well in that case I still say they need to wait because the instructions on USCIS are to send certified official copy.

Yep I agree. It seems like some people got rfe because of it, so waiting a little bit sounds smarter.

Some of the larger banks will allow you to open an acct with a foreign issued passport and other forms of documentation in lieu of a SSN.

Depends on the state. We didn't get any marriage certificate. We registered the marriage license and when I went to pick up a certified copy I've got back the same looking paper, but with additional information completed on it by the county clerk or whoever and a signature, plus the seal to certify it's original.

It can be the same paper but it’s a different document because it will have a different stamp on it. Ours was the same paper but as a license it didn’t have the clerk’s signature and stamp.
