My wife moved to the US on a K-1 visa. We've since been married and she's received her Permanent Residence card. But we're not sure about traveling outside the US still. She still has her British passport with her maiden name on it, so what's going to happen when we try to travel? Should she apply for a new British passport with her new name? Or can she apply for a US passport?

Thanks!

ps. without reading this site & forums she probably wouldn't even be here now, so thanks to all the contributors who have made this site so great :D

She needs to take her passport, Green Card and marriage certificate with her. When she re-enters the USA, the marriage certificate can be shown to the CBP officier as evidence as to why her name is different on her passport and green card.

She can't apply for a US passport until she's a US citizen.

She can travel outside the US with her Green Card and her un-expired passport and she will not likely have absolutely no problems. Just a few pointers though:

1. Buy the airline ticket in the same name as the passport.

2. Bring your marriage certificate (just in case someone wants to verify the name in her Green Card).

3. Bring Green Card (or you will not be able to get back in the US).

I travel for work, and I have had no problems coming back to the US with the Green Card. In very few places I have been asked for other documentation (marriage certificate or Driver’s License to verify my married name).

Be prepared to be asked for you green card at the airport counter when you’re coming back (but since you’re from the UK probably they wont ask for it at the counter). Really, there shouldn’t be any problems.

Good luck and happy traveling.

Yes that is a good pointer, book airline tickets using the name in the passport, if they don't match the airline wont let her board the plane, and wont reissue them.
