Autism a Problem for an Applicant?

Hi,

 

I'm a (somewhat) long time lurker, but first time poster around here. I have a question that has been weighing heavily on my mind. Not that anyone can answer exactly what is going to happen, but many of you here probably have much more experience of the visa application process than I do.

 

Me (applicant) and my wife (US citizen, petitioner) have now received information from the NVC that all our civil documents have been accepted and the case will be  transferred to a US Embassy. What do you think, will it be likely to pose a problem in the medical examination that I have got a diagnosis on the autistic spectrum (Asperger's) and diagnosis for difficulties in concentration (AD/D)? My wife has been extremely kind and patient with me in trying to ensure that I am not a lost case, but for some reason the situation continues to bother me.

 

Of course while filling in the forms, I had to answer whether I pose a threat to the public safety, which I do not. I have been able to hold down to a part-time employment in a stressful work environment (hospitality/customer service) for some time now. Obviously there are empty spots in my work history that I also filled in. But I have never suffered of psychotic/maniacal depression and I have never been institutionalized. I would think that the panel doctor will ask me which sort of medication I have got currently?

I'm a K1 visa applicant but I found this post through searching the site. I'm autistic too, and I got approved just fine! I was worried too, but I just gave them my report from my diagnosis at the medical exam, they were extremely understanding, and I got my passport back with my visa earlier this week. Nothing to worry about at all 😊

I will know more next week as that is when I will have my interview at the embassy but so far the frustration has been with panel physician. My psychologist thought I don’t need any extra paperwork so I listened to her and didn’t think more of it. Of course the panel physician is doing his job thoroughly and picked on my medication, wanting a statement from my doctor.

 

So now it looks like my papers are not going to make it to the embassy on time before the interview. Has been frustrating to hunt for a statement in the last minute, which I also had to get translated as the psychiatrist I used to go to no longer works at the clinic, and this temporary one didn’t feel comfortable enough writing a statement in English.

 

The panel physician said he would not forward my papers on to the embassy before he got a statement he was happy with so now I am nervous if more time and money will be wasted trying to get another statement. I dropped off the papers at the clinic yesterday so we shall see. Haven’t even heard back yet from the clinic as to which vaccinations/boosters I need.

Just wanted to post an update that I was at the interview last week and approved pending medical results. So despite having had my medical two weeks before the interview, the results had not made it to the embassy on time. Someone in the Scandinavians thread in the Regional sub-forum knew that the medical papers are sent by snail mail rather than electronically so take this into consideration 😊

 

Also, for the the benefit of any applicants with diagnoses on the autistic spectrum who are reading this thread in the future, be more proactive than I was and don’t believe if someone tells you don’t need any additional papers from your doctor. Get it/them in English (either directly from the

doctor/psychiatrist or by using a certified translator) and make sure that the certificate brings out how you can be a fully functioning member of the society (ie. not become a public charge) and that you do not pose a threat for the security of yourself or others.
