I had no idea what was going on, so I looked it up.

"In another statement, the U.S. Open sought to explain what went down on the court Saturday. “On the fifth point in the second game of the second set between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, the chair umpire witnessed coaching taking place from Williams’ coach. Even though her coach has admitted to coaching, Williams has made it clear that she did not receive any coaching. Nevertheless, in accordance with the rules, Williams was assessed a Code Violation, resulting in a warning.”

“At the completion of the fifth game of the second set, Williams was assessed a second code violation for racquet abuse, which required a point penalty,” the U.S. Open’s statement added. “At the changeover, at 4-3, Williams was assessed a third code violation for verbal abuse in the judgment of the umpire, which then required a game penalty. The chair umpire’s decision was final and not reviewable by the Tournament Referee or the Grand Slam Supervisor who were called to the court at that time.”

So Serena Williams was outplayed, lost her composure, got into a fight with the line judge for cheating (which her coach admitted to, even though she denied the coaching), then tries to bully the judge into apologizing for his call.  She lost her temper, destroyed rackets, and tried to make it look like the judge was being sexist when she lost.

Congrats to Naomi for the win that a spoiled American tried to minimize.  You did your country proud, Ms. Osaka.

I have played people like that, they are bad losers and have a melt down if they think they should be winning, must admit sometimes I have helped them go that way.

At least a fine, no mention of a ban.

To be sure, there are men that have notoriously had meltdowns on the court with little to no consequences. We even call some of those men 'icons' now because of that behavior (which is obnoxious of course). Serena's behavior was upsetting. She was clearly being bested by Naomi, and instead of keeping her cool, she just went off. Naomi's achievements should be celebrated, as the first Haitian-Japanese woman to win (and it was against someone Naomi looks up to!), she not only had to withstand Serena's ego trying to downplay her victory, but then had to endure being booed by the audience and stood there sobbing.

No doubt you are right.  I don’t watch sports much and certainly not tennis.  But when I watched this clip, I was shocked.  (Well, not really.  Serena came across as a spoiled brat IMO)  If you lose, at least lose gracefully, I say.  Then come back another day and try again.

But I do recall some fluff about McEnroe back in the day when I was a kid.  Evidently he showed his behind on the court as well on a regular basis.  I’m sure Serena’s incident seems bigger due to social media today.  But neither would have been a role model for me nor my children from what I can tell.

Hopefully Naomi’s tears of sadness will turn to joy when she is welcomed home as victorious.  It really SHOULD have been all about her...

I hope we can reach a time, when pointing out someone's race is totally unimportant when talking about someones accomplishments.

I think we could all hope for a world that will be color-blind one day. I wasn't really mentioning it in terms of race though, only that it is an achievement to be first at something for those countries. Kind of like cheering an underdog football team that has never won a Superbowl before. But now that you mention it though, as a woman of color herself Naomi really did idolize Serena as a kid (if you read her backstory), and I just find it doubly embarrassing how Serena behaved towards her and the game. Althea Gibson paved the way for both of these women (she had to endure quite a lot more than just being bested at a match and handled things with grace)... and Serena dishonored that.
