Just received my Case Complete from NVC this morning and saw a couple of messages in CEAC. While we are documentarily qualified, there were some instructions for additional documents to gather and bring to the interview. I called NVC and spoke to a rep there but wanted to run these by the Aussie community as well.

1) Australian Police Certificate: We got a Name Check Only (code 35) showing unspent offences. We did not do fingerprints. In CEAC, the certificate was marked as Accepted. However, we also received a message stating: "The police certificate required for Australia is not needed in order for the interview to be scheduled. However, the police certificate must be obtained and submitted before the visa interview. For information regarding an acceptable police certificate, please use our Document Finder at https://nvc.state.gov/find" The NVC rep thought this meant we needed to make sure our certificate had not expired by the time of the interview. It is only 2 months old at this stage, so I don't think that's a concern. For those of you who have already gone through the interview, which type of certificate did you supply? Do we need fingerprints? Do we need a report showing spent offences too?

2) Petitioner W2s: NVC requested we provide all W2s for my 2017 tax return. These don't exist, though, as I have worked overseas all of 2017. The NVC rep said a signed statement explaining this is sufficient to take to the interview. Anyone else have experience with this?

3) Joint Sponsor W2s: NVC requested we provide the W2s for our joint sponsors for 2017. We provided tax transcripts for our joint sponsors for 2015, 2016 and 2017. Per the Dept of State website, W2s weren't listed as a requirement for tax transcripts, only if we were sending copies of tax returns, so we didn't provide. We can get this, but it will just cost us a bit of money and time because our sponsor is not comfortable sending this type of info over email. We provided extensive current income evidence in the form of employment letters and paystubs, we just didn't provide W2s for the previous year. Anyone have experience or advice on this point?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Hi there congrats!

1) I requested an Aus PC in May and I don’t remember whether I chose code 33 or code 35. The right one should have “Complete Disclosure” however .. you must obtain a new police certificate to have for the day of interview from the country you’re living in ..so as soon as you get an interview date i’d suggest you get a new one about 2 weeks before your interview since it takes about a week to get to you.

NVC clearly states a police certificate with fingerprints is preferred however a name check only will be accepted as long as all offenses are shown.

When I received CC I’ve also received another email as a reminder that I’d make sure I had the correct AUS PC and to bring the original one with me at the day of interview.

3) If you can get it all, get it just to be safe!

I know of someone who’s had their interview and they were missing a paper from their joint sponsor so that person had to go get what he was missing and submitted it to the Embassy, that person still doesn’t have his visa from 3 weeks ago and is under Administrative processing and he’s been told it can take up to 60 days for them to give him his passport back with visa in it ..so it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it !

Best of luck! x

Wow.. as if I wasn'r confused enough already haha. I am currently in the US (returning to Australia end of next month ) waiting to hear from NVC to begin processing. I am trying to be organised and ensure that I have all the relevant documents ready but this whole Police Check business is hurting my brain so I am hoping that someone can lay it out in really simple terms.. do I need an AFP check OR a NSW check or BOTH? I thought I needed that AFP check only but after soing some reading I am super confused 🙄 Also, given that I am in the US and won't be back in OZ for about 6 weeks do I NEED to get a check with fingerprints?? This would be problematic for obvious reasons..it may mean i go back to Australia sooner to prevent any further delay... ugh..or could i go to a police station here in Texas to have my fingerprints done? I would appreciate if someone who actually knows could help me. Thanks in advance. :)

You need the AFP check, not NSW. Fingerprints are not necessary as long as you pick the right category when filling out the AFP online application (Category 33 - Immigration/Citizenship which includes ALL offenses, whether unspent or not).

From the Australian embassy - Australian police certificate: You must apply for an Australian Federal Police Certificate (AFP). Australian police certificates are valid for 12 months from date of issuance. Your certificate can be based on a name check or fingerprint check. If it’s based on a name check, it must contain all aliases previously and presently used. Failure to provide a name check certificate with all aliases may result in the consular officer refusing your application for a police certificate based on a fingerprint check.
