Not to butt in, but I did. Gas lines. Misery Index, Rampant inflation, astronomical interest rates, bullied by Iran,  failed rescue attempt . So many fond memories of that morons time in office. signed away the Panama canal.

You do know that the president of the United States isn't a God? I.e. not all powerful, and Iran probably wouldn't have been a problem, were it not for America messing in its internal affairs, in the first place.

   I don't think there was one single event. The Soviet Union was in a long process of crumbling. Chernobyl was an important factor. Reagan was in the best position of anyone outside the USSR to put pressure on them and he did. If Reagan and Chernobyl had never existed the USSR would still have collapsed.
