It's not just about illegal activity.

I think I've already said it before that its not illegal to owe the IRS money.

Its has more to do with ethics and settling conflicts of interests. That's why presidents should have transparency. Jimmy Carter sold his peanut farm to prevent such things from occuring.

And what a fine President he turned out to be. One of the worst in US history

I can't say ... He was way before my time.

But my point remains.

He did what he had to do to stay ethical.

No, Carter did NOT sell his peanut farm.  He put it into a blind trust which was managed by his brother Billy until his term was over, then Jimmy ran it again.

The emoluments clause was written to prevent federal employees from receiving gifts (bribes) from foreign entities.  Mostly designed to keep ambassadors overseas legal.  The WH comes with attorneys and PR folks who prevent that.

And since Trump is donating 100% of his salary, I don't see that weak argument gaining any ground.  First president ever.

A quick Google reveals that he "gave up" his peanut farm. Either way he had no control.

The salary of the president is only 400k.. his secret service bill already offsets this due to his large family with multiple places of residence .

So donating his salary litterally means nothing.

You said sold, I just pointed out that he did not, and in fact maintained control thru his brother (who put it into debt, BTW).  Jimmy later took over and made things right again.

ONLY $400K.  Compared to Trump’s other assets, I agree that is nothing.  Are you willing to donate half your salary to a good cause?  Say to a family who only makes $5K per year?  I suspect not.  I know I am not donating any of my salary to any causes, good or otherwise.  And until I do, I don’t feel it is right to marginalize what Trump is doing with his salary.  At least he’s being transparent about it.

Billy Carter was awesome. Lobbied for Lybia, speaking of ethics. Got so drunk on one flight back to Atlanta, he deplaned and took a whizz on the wheel of the plane.

Reagan sold arms under the table to Iran, while using the proceeds to fight a dirty war in Nicaragua.  He also just about double the US national debt during his time in office. But do go on about Carter.

Carter vs Reagan.  A subject that no reasonable person would even debate.

We even had a misery index under carter

What impressed you the most? Selling arms Iran, supporting contra rebels, helped fund death squads throughout South America, or was it his doubling the United States debt? Also I take it that you are not of the view that presidents have little overall effect on the economy?

Carter's record wasn't so good either ...

Unable to equip a military rescue effort for the Tehran embassy because he had cut the military budget too much to even maintain equipment

Was perceived as so week Islamic fundamentalists felt enabled to attack said embassy

When the hostages were released what had just occurred, Reagan's election, they were terrified of him

Reagan Went toe to toe with the USSR and caused the Soviet Union to collapse, he spent them into submission

Reagan caused the Berlin Wall to come down leading to the reunification of Germany because the USSR was busy with Reagan and Star Wars

I can still hear him saying Mr Gorbachev tear down that wall

No comparison Carter to Reagan as president

Point of fact,  Chernobyl caused the Soviet Union to collapse. Reagan was just an actor reading lines from a teleprompter.
