@Greek,

the VJ average timeline based on experience of people who have updated their case on VJ.

so hopefully it is true that AOS process in Detroit, MI only take 4-5 months and (i wish) even faster ;)

I am afraid that 4 months is a long dream and wont happen. I don't even think 5 months will happen. I was talking to a lawyer and he was explaining to me how the government shutdown has actually impacted the timelines severely. I am just very sad that I was unlucky enough to file my application during one of the worst times possible. Based on the timelines that other people submitted it looks like it took 4 months for them up to September filers. My case status hasn't changed for 115 days.

@Greek,

I know waiting is the hardest thing of all... and there's nothing we can do in this point. We just have to  waiting and waiting..

please be noted also that case results depend upon a variety of factors unique to each case (example, some people say AOS from B-1 Visa will take longer than K-1, i dont know about the processing time from F-1 Visa) .

as a fee-based agency, USCIS still continue to process applications and petitions for immigration  during the shutdown, I received my NOA1 letter, and do the biometrics during government shutdown so, we could say that they still worked on our applications.

since your case is about 112 days since your NOA1, I still pray that  theres a magic for you in the day 120 :),.btw, i have a friend that already got interview invitation letter, but there is no change on the USCIS Website, and another person who waiting for 8 months since the status on the websites changed to "ready for interview"

Good Luck for you, for us..for all filers of Detroit Field office !!

Hello Detroit VJ,

I'm adjusting status from K-1 and my I -94 is valid until March 13 . I want to apply for a driver license in MI  and I can't find answers  on DMV   website . Do a NOA1  from the I -485 or EAD   counts as a proof of legal presence ?  Also ,if I have an  foreign driver license ,do I need to pass the written test  or just the vision test ?

I have a SS number and I can't post to my time line ,until the administrators of the VJ website do some work.

Thanks!

I'm not sure on if you need to pass the written test or the vision test as i've not got that far with driving in the US yet but i think you need your state ID for you to even go ahead and start the driving process thats if you haven't already got a state ID.

i couldn't apply for my state ID until i got my EAD

Things could of changed or be different for others though, just going off what i've experienced.

Hi! If you don't have a driver's license from your country, you have to take a reading and road test. That is my case and I went to Secretary of State, filled a form and showed them my social security card, mi passport, a letter from USCIS and another letter from my health Insurance company that prove that I am living in Michigan (at least 2 letters that the companies sent to you and have address and your name printed). The people in the Secretary of State told me that they have to check my documents with USCIS before I can take my tests for the driver's license.

This web page show step by step what ypu have to do foe get a driver's license or ID in Michigan:

I hope it can help you!

Hi Alun,

I just did this. I took UK passport, birth certificate, certified marriage certificate, SSN, proof of MI residency (bank statement), latest communication from USCIS (appointment letter for AOS interview) and joint tax filing. I don't have EAD. For personal reasons I want to take the test as a learner, but I was told I could bypass waiting 30 days until the road test if I used my UK license. I took the written test then they have to get clearance from Homeland Security. That took several weeks. Then I could go back to the SOS office to pick up my temporary license. DM me if you want any help.

Thank you Emeryx ,Kyquintero and FIp&jim  for sharing your experience with the DMV . I need to read the booklet more and will go to take the written test after my NOA 1 which I expect any day now .

I'm really thankful for the visa journey  community , We really are in this together !

Hi Fip & Jim,

if you dont mind can i ask how long your Driver license valid? I know some state they just allow to get driver license when you have EAD card and it is valid for one year as same day of EAD card.

I only have my temporary (learner's) permit. It's valid for 6 months & I can take the road test after 30 days.

Before Christmas it looked like Detroit was doing an amazing job with AOS. Now it seems like people's applications have been halted completely. I have called like 1000 times USCIS and asking about application and how things are. Today I talked to a very nice USCIS Tier 2 agent that described the situation. Said that while the government shutdown doesn't officially apply for USCIS. They weren't paid at the time (government wasn't issuing payroll for any government agency) a large amount of agents were taking long vacations. As a result the operations for many offices were under-performing and  now we are experiencing this backlog or applications after September filers. Be patient and good luck to everyone.

Hello All,

Glad to join this topic as we live in Michigan as well.

My fiancee just came to the States via K-1 last Friday.

We are currently gathering all documentation to submit for AOS and scheduled our marriage for 3/27/19.

At this time we have her I-94 ready and waiting for the 10 business day from POE date to apply for her SSN.

May not be relevant to this topic, but I do have couple questions if any can kindly answer ^^

1. Will it reflect negatively if wife does not take on the husband's last name?

2. If she wants to have an American name as her legal name, at what stage will be most convenient to do free of hassle?

We'd like to apply for SSN after diving deep to the above couple questions and submitting our AOS.

Hi HaruBK and congratulations!

It's not a problem about your wife's surname. I kept mine and haven't had any issues.

I went to the Pontiac Social Security Office 2 weeks after arrival to get my SSN. It was very straight forward, it took about 10 minutes in total.
