All $400K raised for Good Samaritan homeless veteran is gone, attorney says

“McClure created a GoFundMe account to thank Bobbitt for his kindness after he used his last $20 to buy her gas when she broke down on Interstate 95 near Philadelphia, sharing his story to prompt more than 14,000 people to donate to the fund.

 

At the time, the amount left was in dispute. Fallon estimated during Thursday's hearing that more than $250,000 should be left, but during an appearance on "Today" on Aug. 27, McClure and D'Amico told Megyn Kelly that about $150,000 was left.

 

The couple used a portion of the money to buy a 1999 Ford Ranger and a trailer for Bobbitt -- both of which they placed in their names, according to a lawsuit filed against the couple.”

Just sad.  It is amazing how so many folks will take advantage of others charity.

Could it be a ploy by the veterans attorney to apply pressure on the couple to not deplete the account? And if it is true that they depleted the account, how low can you go.

An update to this story.  Apparently the homeless vet was in on the scam as well and all three are being charged.

Something I am currently involved with, very legit, want to use GoFundMe as a fund raising aspect, I am very reluctant due to the scam connotations.

I know what you mean.  These funding sites have such a huge potential for misuse and fraud.

On average, these GoFundMe campaigns raise from 5k to 10k.  And I'm sure these guys were aiming in that range and it wouldn't garner too much attention.  Well, when you put in two keywords together like "homeless veteran", a lot of hearts will pour out their support.  I mean, who wouldn't want to help a homeless veteran, right?  

 

Their undoing was their made up story went viral and they received 400k.  Don Juan and Cleopatra ended up spending and gambling away most of the money in a matter of months.  Way to go, all three of em.  They deserve every charge coming their way.

Probably the hardest thing for the Dishonest to do in such situations is to restrain their spending for some time.

Those able to do so would probably avert a lot of actual and potential scrutiny.
