Hi All

We are currently trying  to get our heads around AOS from K1 and had a couple of questions regarding the next steps...

We married today at the city clerk's office in Manhattan and were issued with a marriage certificate after the ceremony.

Can we send in a photocopied version of this with form I-485? Or should we request a certified copy and send that in? Also, will a short version suffice, or will we need the longer certificate that includes witness name(s)?

I suggest a certified copy. That’s what we did. Do not send the original! I’m unsure about which version...I only had one version and it did not include witness names.

You have to send the version that gets filed with the county. It would typically say on it something like "this certifies that this is a copy of the records of XYY County" or some stamp, embossing, or seal indicating  the marriage has been registered with the county or state. You may send a photocopy of that version. Not every state has witnesses. If you married in the clerks office, then they very well may have entered it into the records on the spot and given you a certified record.
