Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the difference between going to the RCMP and Commissionaires? There's a Commissionaires office downtown so if there isn't a huge difference it would be easier when the time comes for us to go there rather than to the RCMP in either Richmond or Burnaby.

Good question. I'm the USC so I don't know this answer either. I haven't a clue what Commissionaires is, nor does my fiance in Canada, lol. All I know is RCMP documents are asked for so it only makes sense to me to go directly to the source, RCMP office. I've wondered why people opp to go to something besides the source... would love justifications/explanations from others :)

@MeghanK

The RCMP does not have jurisdiction in major urban areas. So cities like Vancouver have their own police force, anything that falls beyond that line is jurisdiction of the RCMP. So if the police in the major cities do not do fingerprinting they out source to Commissionaires - while the RCMP are able to do it themselves!

EDIT: I guess in some provinces RCMP no longer does this but for Alberta and BC the RCMP will do the fingerprinting!

Awesome, thanks so much! This makes way more sense now, especially in our case being outside Vancouver :)

No problem! I asked a ton of questions at the RCMP cause I didn't understand either - I'm outside of a major city in Alberta. I'm thankful I didn't end up having to use Commissionaires cause they are a few hours away from me haha!

Had my interview today for k1! I only gave the lady my Privacy Act and there were no issues at all! At this point, I wouldn't worry about getting any other criminal record check and just get the Privacy Act. Mine had no picture, no fingerprints (says they were taken and destroyed), no seal.

And yet we went today with name check and the check with finger prints and picture (not privacy act) and were approved without question, so it seems they still don't know which they want to accept. My suggestion would be to bring two if you can...just in case.

I called the commissioners in Winnipeg a couple hours ago and the agent I talked to said that he received an email

about this a couple days ago and that their office here would refuse to do the Privacy Act request, and would continue to issue fingerprints under the “immigration intent” reason. But he was firm in saying they will NOT do finger print checks under the “Privacy Act” reason.

I’m headed to the RCMP to see if they can help me!

Hello I am just wondering what did you do? Also from peg and it seems the commissionaires won’t be able to help. Thanks

Go to the police headquarters located on smith street! They were able to do everything I needed and I received the privacy act paper no problem.

My expedite request got approved to the London Embassy so the pressure of NVC is over. I’m going to just roll with my privacy act and cross my fingers.

Best of luck everyone.

just an FYI that it says that making a request under the privacy act should be NO cost.

Also, you can make the request online without going in? I am confused...

This is so stupid.   I'm beyond frustrated.  I paid $75 for the privacy act and another $75 for the visa/border crossing check.  I wish the right hand would tell the left what they're doing. :(

My husband paid for both as well and I am mad about it! Better to have both regardless
