Urgent: New police certificate requirement!!!

With regards to the fingerprint/privacy act:

I spoke with the RCMP last week, and the national Visa Center to get more information. The national Visa Center said they could not guarantee that the embassy would not require the fingerprints for those of us who were given a cc date of before September 10. It was recommended to me by the RCMP and the national Visa Center to simply get the fingerprints done so that it’s one less piece of paper that I need to worry about.

The RCMP also said that they did not understand why there was a new change given that they are looking for a non-certified copy under the privacy act, but despite their lack of understanding it still is the requirement going forward.

My advice to anybody who had their case finalized before September 10, just get them done so that you don’t risk being denied a visa because of it. The commissioners office charged me $50 to do this additional check. They did tell me it would look exactly like the last one I received, the non-privacy act version, except the fingerprints would not be visible on the report.

Hey Sonata

I haven’t read any more posts to see if someone has given you this information but you are not looking for a certified version of the privacy act, they cannot do certified versions of the privacy act. Contact your local commissioners office again and let them know you need a background check done under the privacy act but it is NOT a certified version. I was at the Commissionaires  office in London Ontario last week and they read me the email from the department of homeland security that even stated they are expecting uncertified versions. That’s probably why the commissioners office is telling you they can’t do it. My Commissionaires  office new exactly what I was looking for when I went. I have a feeling yours was being confused by the fact you were looking for a certified version.

Hope this helps

I decided to the Privacy Act one. I already have the fingerprint sealed one, but as I haven’t submitted anything to NVC yet, I was told to get the Privacy Act one and submit it. As I am doing this through a third party, it may take a week. Hope not too much longer as I was process to proceed!! What a pain!!

Finished my interview an hour ago for the K1.

The lady I had didn’t ask or say anything about the fingerprints. She asked for the police report and I handed her the name check I had done with York Region Police. She asked if I’ve even been convicted here or anywhere else and I told her no. That was that. During the interview, same question.

They do take your prints while you’re handing in your documents and your left hand prints during interview(at least for me they did).

I don’t know if they’re more understanding because the interview date was so close to September 10th. Or maybe with all the confusion, they realize people aren’t getting the right one?

Just in case I did have the check from the commissionaires if they asked for it and I went and ordered the ones from RCMP showing my prints last week.

Me too! I think we were there at the same time :) Also had no issues with the police certificate. I just had a name check one from the commissionaires. Glad they didn't ask for the fingerprint one because I got it done last Monday and it didn't arrive in time for me to bring it to Montreal!

Haha!! Probably. Congrats though! 😊

I had the privacy act one, but they never asked for it. I did get the certified fingerprints done Wednesday and like you. It wasn’t done in time. However, YRP said it would take 2 weeks. If they did want it, I would’ve mailed it in next week.

  • Procedure for Obtaining: To obtain this document, you must submit your fingerprints to a local police service or RCMP-approved partner agency.  YOU MUST STATE THAT YOU ARE REQUESTING THE RECORD UNDER THE PRIVACY ACT.  Do not select “Visa/Border Crossing” as the purpose of the request AND NOT GIVE “VISA/BORDER APPLICATION” AS THE PURPOSE OF THE REQUEST.  You must also specifically request the record which includes the “RCMP National Repository entire holdings.”

So are you suppose to give a reason for purpose of the request or leave it blank? 🤔

Sorry you're saying yes to leaving it blank?

You will have to ask the rcmp, police, or commissionaires exactly how to fill it out. I only needed a name check.  I would assume the "reason" would be privacy act but I could be wrong.

I called the commissioners in Winnipeg a couple hours ago and the agent I talked to said that he received an email

about this a couple days ago and that their office here would refuse to do the Privacy Act request, and would continue to issue fingerprints under the “immigration intent” reason. But he was firm in saying they will NOT do finger print checks under the “Privacy Act” reason.

I’m headed to the RCMP to see if they can help me!

Hi,

I’m also from Winnipeg, How did you get fingerprint checks under privacy act? Thanks!!!

I just requested mine done today here in Winnipeg and they are so confused as to why they are requesting this.  They don’t even know what to classify it as on the computer. I had to remind them that to not put Visa purposes as stated on the website. Nonetheless with much hesitation we did it.  She said it may take up to two weeks but the sheet she gave me states 2-6 weeks.

when they asked me I showed them the website police check requirements

Hi,

I’m also from Winnipeg, just wanna ask how did you request the fingerprint check under privacy act? Thank you!!!

Hi, I am also from Winnipeg.  I went to the WPG police station and told the front desk I need my fingerprints taken for immigration/privacy act.

The officer told me to get both fingerprints under the privacy act and visa/immigration purposes.  So in total I have one document under the privacy act which is a document showing no fingerprints but indicating that you do not have any records.  The one under the visa/immigration purposes shows a photo of you in the center and then your fingerprints on either sides.

I submitted my documents to NVC in August. The criminal record check I submitted was requested under Visa/Boarder Crossing. Yesterday I received an email stating my criminal record check does not comply, so I have to obtain the new one, which sucks. The most horrible part is that Nobody from the Department of State or NVC officially announces this. One would only know when it happens.

So according to my experience and past posts,  this new requirement does not only apply to those who have already been scheduled the interview, but to anyone whose case is not yet completed at NVC

So you submitted all docs to NVC in August, did you have a case complete then get the email about the certificate or no?
