All this over $500.... when he said he owed “a lot of money” I was thinking he meant thousands.

That's what I was thinking too. All that time, money, trips spent to get married and he didnt do something months ago that's required by law and integral to his case because of a couple hundred bucks.

This is actually about the difference of GETTING $700 as opposed to PAYING $500. So really this is all over $1200 difference.

That's still not a lot of money when all is said and done. Especially when you think what this process costs and you probably spend something like that amount on a flight ticket to the Philippines. Agreed it's not pocket change, and around 60% of Americans have less than $1000 in savings. But if all that stood between me and getting my paperwork moving again was $1200... ($700 of which you have already paid)...

Like I said. I was under the impression that they would only need W2s to prove income for 2017.

I had no idea they needed completed 1040.

I had way more in savings... but I took a bulk of it and used it to pay down a SUBSTANTIAL BULK of my credit card debt. So right now.... I'm quite low on savings. I only have about $1600 in the bank. And I still have to pay for the IV Fee.

why you just didnt file for an ITIN #.... i dunno.

regardless, essentially, you have screwed up. you didnt even bother to file an extension! Now file your taxes and do what you need to do. Stop complaining about obamacare and whether or not you voted for him for crying out loud. At this point, this is nothing new. Youre complaining about owing $500 - you want to trade for my $3000?

PS pretty sure you can use those paid off credit cards to cover the $500.

Problem is:

1. I didn't have Health insurance for 2017. So I have NO IDEA WHAT IM DOING, as far as putting that on the 1040.
2. I live in a Communal property state. Which adds ADDITIONAL paperwork burdens, that I have no idea what to do about.

So how do you know how much you're going to owe if you have no clue about so many things ?

Regardless of immigration, you're supposed by law to file your taxes.

Also - some of your explanations make zero sense. You didn't know your employer offered benefits ? And you didn't ask ??

Because I already filled out most of the information on the Online tax sites. Put the problem I'm encountering on there, is that it keeps asking me for my wife's SSN. It won't accept NRA.
It also demands I fill out a Community Property. Problem is, I have no idea what to do with that.

The online tax software projects that I likely owe $500

You must file (mail) a paper copy to use "NRA".  You can not file electronically.  I used Turbotax (laptop version) in 2015 and 2016.  I used a fake SSN for my wife, printed paper copies, then used whiteout to block the false SS number.  I hand-wrote "NRA" in the field, and mailed it..........no problems at all.

Does Turbotax allow you to figure out "Community Property" issues? I have no idea how that applies seeing as my wife is a foreign spouse.

is Turbotax desktop the same as the online version?

If you are filing as "Married-Filing Separately", I don't see community property as being an issue. But I'm a tax expert.......

I'm not sure about Turbotax online version........I guess you could use it if it allows you to print your tax forms withouy transmitting them.
