My wife and I are at the NVC stage, and apparently we need to submit proof of income for Affidavit of Support.

I have 2017's W2s, as well as W2s for 2016, 2015. Problem is, I still haven't filed 1040 for 2017 because we want to file jointly.,... and it seems very complicated and frankly... I've put it off.

Will W2s be sufficient??? Someone here mentioned that W2s would be sufficient for the NVC stage, but we will need completed 1040s for the interview.

Not sure what's so complicated about it. You file as married separately and that's it. No SSN for the spouse needed.

Right, but the problem is that I will OWE a lot of money... if I file seperately. Wheras, I will be *OWED*  if I file jointly.

Well yeah that's your problem, but immigration needs to see your current taxes anyway. 😛

We did the filing jointly by applying for an ITIN....we submitted ir in March and it was accepted in 3 weeks it wasnt hard at all.

Just because you dont like the choices doesnt mean you can not choose....

If I file right now... do I just submit the 1040EZ ...

and make a copy, and send that in?

You need your transcripts.  Otherwise you could fill out the form copy it send it in but never actually submit it to the IRS.

So what do we do!? I also didn't have health insurance for 2017... and 2017s taxes just look *MINDBREAKINGLY* complex to fill out considering I have no freaking idea how to fill out the 1040ez. It used to be so easy to fill out, but now with the stupid Healthcare "Shared responsibility" bullcrap... I have ZERO idea what I'm supposed to fill out for Line 11

Why not to go to some tax center and get help? Just don't let them convince you to file single. (for some reason a lot of people put single in taxes even though they are married and later claim they were told to do so.)

Not sure if the lack of health insurance might be an issue also or not..

It will be an issue. The Health Insurance portion is what will cause me to Owe $500.

if I was able to file jointly, I could receive $750, rather than having to pay $500.

If I absolutely positively need to get my taxes in order before I can get past the NVC stage... I'll just go ahead and pay the stupid fee, and then file an ammended return once my wife gets here. I swear, I *HATE* how complicated Obamacare has made filing taxes.

..It's only complicated because you don't have health insurance. I mean, that one is on you.

My employer never told me that they offered health insurance until it was too late in 2017. When I was hired on with them, they didn't tell me about any health plans... or really any benefits that they offered.

I didn't vote for this BS. Why should I be penalized simply because I couldn't afford to throw half my income away on Health Insurance, and don't want to use public benefits?
Besides, I'm willing to pay the stupid fee... but why do they have to make the process to pay the fee so damn complicated!? Why can't they provide AMPLE instructions in the 1040 instructions manual!? It doesn't even give you any guidance on what to do if you just didn't have health insurance and can't file for an exemption. It only instructs you on how to file for a stupid exemption!
