Shipping items to America

I really appreciate all the advice me and Polly have received throughout this sometimes stressful process. This website has been a tremendous help. So I have another question for people who have gone through the process of shipping clothing and other similar items to the USA. Not which company to use. I think we've possibly found a good one https://www.parcelhero.com/

Question is this, how difficult is the paperwork and how many different documents do you need to complete, one or two, or more? Filling out your declared items and other paperwork needed, is it all found online, or do the shipping companies provide all of the needed paperwork?? And the confusing part is how to pick it up once it arrives in the US? I see "door to door" service or picking it up at the Port. I've been on the US customs website and it is a little bit confusing as to who can pick it up? Does it have to be a US citizen? Does Polly have to ship it in my name then? Or can she ship it to herself here in the US? And I don't understand this "door to door shipping"?? So you can bypass the Port, and have UPS deliver it to your home address after it clears customs? Sorry if this sounds stupid. I just don't want any problems with her stuff being shipped/getting here.

My hope is that others who have gone through this process could give us some information.

Thanks in advance once again, Curt

Are the things she wants to ship sentimental or stuff that she could easily buy again over here?

I looked into shipping my possessions over but decided it wasn’t worth it in then end as it was nothing I couldn’t get again over here. Ended up selling basically the entire contents of my house (and trashing a lot too) and moved with just 2 suitcases haha

I've just arranged shipping with baggagehub. they've informed me I just have to fill out inventory sheet, upload passport and visa and perhaps another form on the website portal they've given me access to. my boxes from them are arriving next Wednesday so I will let you know as full sheet instructions will be provided with them :) I believe this company organises delivery to the address in the US but again I need to check.

That website you posted a link for has the forms and a lot of information on shipping to the US. They say they help with all  the forms and paperwork

Door to door means they arrange picking  up the boxes at the UK home and delivering the boxes to the US home. With a shipment of many boxes (a pallet full) via a container on a ship, the company makes arrangements for an agent on the US side to do the customs clearance, transfer to a warehouse, and something like a moving van contractor to pick up at the warehouse and truck it across country to your home. There will normally be extra fees tacked on for an agent and such above what their website ads promote. Those promo ads are for uninsured as well. Insurance costs more

Yes she ships to herself. She gets unlimited duty free entry of her household effects as an immigrant. She provides a copy of her visa  to the shipper in order to not pay duty. She provides a detailed inventory  list of what is shipped. We had one for each of twenty something boxes. We insured so added a value to each packed item on the list.

How did you get on with baggagehub?

I am thinking about using them myself. Did it go smoothly?

Has anyone else used them?

thanks for reminding me! yes it went great for me. I had one casualty, a picture frame but that's my fault for not packing properly and kinda over filling that box.

The part that confused me the most was the customs but they are being helpful and make it sound easy and now you have had a good experience I think I will go with them too!

Thank you for the feedback. I hope everything in your new life is going well for you, so great to see you made it!

my stuff was collected on the 27th and delivered here in Washington on the 8th so it went well. I found them really helpfull, and 3 boxes with a total of 72kg cost me £230 ish. that included:

drop off of boxes(highly recommend you use theirs)

collection

delivery

everything is done online via a portal and they are quick to respond to queries.

it's important to remember that when your shipping stuff most people don't care, your boxes WILL be thrown around, so take care when packing :)
