Hi, I searched and found mostly travel subjects after ROC and other things after a greencard has already been received.  But I am wondering if my wife can travel with her chinese passport from Detroit to Chicago to visit the consulate? We received a call on voicemail in Chinese apparently from the chinese government.  They called my phone and the message was in chinese talking about issues with her visa, but the message was vague and instructed to press 9 to talk to a professional.  We do have an ongoing issue through DHS regarding a mismatch in the system which could be her name as I entered her name on the I129f as first name Wen, middle name Wen.  I guess she misunderstood cause I found out later on her passport that her full first name is WenWen. So we were thinking about calling the Chicago chinese consulate, and maybe traveling there if needed.  So I need to know if she is able to fly with just her passport?

As long as the passport is still valid, no issues traveling with it. I actually prefer to travel with my passport myself. I have lots of friends that come visit me all the time ( Of course I have friends, I live in Las Vegas, NV. LOL, and they like the free room) and many are international and fly around the US for work or to visit other people they know, and I have never had them say they had an issue with their foreign passport and going thru airport security.

Hello,

Make sure the call is legit. There is a scam going on targeting Chinese immigrant. Google it.

Does she have driver license ?  You can fly domestically with that. Only reason to use passport would be at embassy or consulate

Depends on the drivers license. As of January 22,2018 you are required to have a Real ID to be compliant with the new guidelines. Michigan is on the list, so they should be OK as long as they have a newer Real ID compatible ID. They just started issuing the new ones in Michigan, so check your ID for the Real ID Symbol. Link Below.

You guys should have no issues with flying within the continental US. I'm more concerned this might be a scam call though as BKL said above. So be careful

As OP is from Michigan, I assume he has license from that state, and so would his wife. Michigan is currently under review for compliance, so I would check with a call to the airport, or a google search to see if currently a Michigan State issued ID will work for air travel. I am going to post a link below.

Did not know that tidbit, thanks, even though my license is compliant, guess i will start carrying my passport

I just updated my post, Looks like Michigan is now compliant, but they have just started issuing the new ID's this year, so OP should double check just to be safe. I always carry my passport as a just in case scenario. Never know when I am in Detroit sometimes and feel like a run over the boarder into Canada.

We actually just applied for her I'D on Wednesday. So she only has her passport for now. They said it will take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive

Yes, sounds like a real ID is on the way. Used to be they could print the IDs right in the office and away you go. Part of the new system is all IDs have to be printed from one or two locations in the state. Usually just one because people were breaking into local dmv offices and stealing the ID machines. So she will have the real ID. Another way to tell is if you had to provide proof of your address with a utility bill, bank statement, etc. That's another requirement of real ID

We will call the consulate first. But the Chinese message didn't ask for money. It just said to press 9 or call the Chinese government. But thanks for this post as I let my wife know about it.

I think it sounds like a scam.  Consulates don’t robo call.  The fact it was vague and the option to press 9 to speak to someone means it was a robo call.  It’s a big thing to target people with Chinese names.  Don’t talks to anyone calling you.  Consulates are famously difficult to get through to, they rarely answer phones, much less initiate calls.  They’d have sent something in writing.
