Vent about I-485

On a hunch, looked at my copy of the paperwork I sent in.  Lo and behold, I have the wrong exp date for one of the credit cards I used for payment....  I hate today.  Triple checked everything and missed THAT.  ARGH!!!

 

Waiting for the denial...so I can turn around and resubmit....  Woman I spoke with at USCIS call center said maybe I'll get it back by Tuesday next week.  

 

They'll send the entire package of documents back to me, right?

Yes, my understanding (from other's experiences) is when it comes to invalid or incomplete payment, they send the whole thing back and all you'll have to do is resend it with the corrected payment. I see that happens for people who send, say, a check for the wrong amount or something, so I imagine process would be the same since it still involves the payment.

 

Bright side (I know, it's hard to see one at the moment) is you figured this out now, and are expecting it to be sent back, versus not realizing it and being surprised when it came back. I'd go ahead and fill out a new CC payment form (quadruple check it this time ) and have it ready for when it arrives so you can resend ASAP.

You’ll receive the whole package back with time stamps on each page and the papers stapled together in a weird order. Just replace the payment document and send everything back as-is with the green paper on top which will be included in the package.

Oh my goodness yes, quadruple, quintuple, etc.  Lol!  Thank you for pointing out the silver lining.  You're right!

I'm definitely not good at thinking this way whenever I'm in the middle of it, but it helps to focus on the destination and not the journey. There are plenty of things I cringe at and would do differently when I look back on what we've accomplished so far with this process, but no matter which way it went, we still got to this point and that's all that matters. Hang in there!

USCIS charged the one card with the correct card info (for $1k).  The smaller amount was what didn't work...so....  Not sure if they'll reverse the charge then send back or what.  Can't resubmit until that charge clears.  Sigh.  

 

I'm daydreaming that they'll say "well, you paid almost the whole thing so cool, just hurry up and pay the rest. "

If it's just a hold/pending on your card, my guess it will drop off. By the time you get it back, it should either have hard posted or dropped off, so you should know for sure by then.

It posted as of this morning.  Called USCIS to find out how long it'll take to have the charge refunded (or if perhaps they'll still go ahead and process the 485).  Was transferred to the queue to speak with an officer and will get a call back in about 90 minute.  

 

While this is driving me insane, I hope that down the road my frustration may help someone else as they may have answers for this type of what if scenario.

Yes - been there! Going through something difficult is a learning experience, for yourself and for others if you choose to share. We are going through something frustrating concerning my husband's medical vaccination record, and it's one of those one-off things that we wish we could find related topics on to refer to, so I definitely recommend sharing your outcome for others who may wind up in the same boat down the road.

Immigration officer called back...

 

Short answer: They don't know what will happen.

 

Long answer: They may give me a grace period to pay the remaining amount.  They may reject the entire thing.  If they reject it, they may take 30 days to back out the charge on the card.  They don't know.  Up to the Lockbox processing center on what they want to do and there's nothing in the system to show if they're "accepted" or "rejected" the 485.

Omg!!  We got the texts and emails last night confirming the forms were accepted!!!  Receipt numbers sent and hard copies on their way!!  Woohoo!!  I guess they opted to let us send in a corrected credit card authorization form for the remainder of the funds.  😊
