Do I need an attorney to apply for P1 visa

I would like to start by saying that I am certain that I meet the requirements for a p1 visa. I have a willing sponsor, and I know that I can get all the necessary documents on my own. I've looked over the application process and it seems lengthy, but not impossible to complete without legal aid. I clearly know next to nothing about immigration law beyond personal experience, but the rates I am getting from immigration attorneys seem excessive. I just want to know my options  so I won't be taken advantage of.

 

I am wondering if anyone has ever successfully applied for a P1 visa without an attorney or has an opinion on whether it is possible? I don't want to blow thousands of dollars if I could do the process on my own. That being said, I would hate to make a mistake in my application that could potentially affect my ability to play in the US in the future. 

 

Any advice is much appreciated!

I would imagine mostly agents sort them out.
