typically after NVC receives your file, they should have case# assigned within 2 days.  This spreadsheet is the closest you will get to similar timelines, some people have been adding their dates here, so looks like someone who got approves on 9/12, NVC received their file on 9/27 and got case# on the same date. what did they tell you when you called? they should have a case# by now. i would call and figure out why yours is taking so long. unless they sent it back to USCIS(which is usually the case of not assigning you a #) keep calling to ask what is going on.

Got an email yeaturday morning from NVC saying they have my petition and that in 8 weeks it should be in the embassy.

No NVC case number. Nothing else.

Should I just call NVC today or tomorrow to find out if they have assigned me a case number???

Any thoughts.

Once they receive it, they should have a case number for you the next day or so. So call them up, sometimes they're also just slow updating their systems so might want to call later in the day rather than in the morning to give them time to catch up.
