So I found one that's $100 a month, and $1,000 deductable, we could do that is that a good deal? Is there one that does it without the deductible fee

He is going to start college after I move there when he is around 21

Start college fund then, it's usually not free.

what is renters insurance and is it illegal if we don't have it?

Either way do you think 3000 a month is a good amount to survive for two people?

Renters insurance usually offers some liability coverage and can cover the loss of your goods in case of they, fire, flood - you pick coverage needed. My tenants have to show proof of liability coverage up to $200K.

$3000 a month can be ok - is that gross or net?

Which area of the country?

Peoria, Arizona, and it would be 3000 after tax

Dear Southern California,

In a magical place, we purchased an 1800sf home on 10 acres of land for $50,000. We have four seasons and all in all, little extreme (ie hurricanes and major snow/ice) during the season called winter.  Summer is hot and humid, but we are 2 hours away from the ocean or mountains, and 15 minutes away from the lake.

Property taxes are around $300 year

Currently, gas (petrol), is under $2.50/gallon - and that's on a holiday weekend.

We have no smog.

We have little to no traffic if you avoid major highways (and you usually can).

For the most part, people are friendly.

Beer is cheap.

Sincerely,

Southern Virginia

I’m packing my bags now, future neighbor!

You wanna heat something really sad?  We’re looking to buy our first home right now, and will be spending a minimum of $700k 😭

Um no, I got that quote wrong if you read up someone explained it to me and I found another quote instead

Are you on any medications? Will you have an HSA?  Do you plan on never being sick?

I have alright health insurance through work for me and my wife.  It’s about 400 a month and by July we had spent another $3.5k on medical expenses out of pocket (tax free) using our HSA. Now we have spent that, everything is covered at 90% but won’t be covered 100% until we’ve spent $7k out of pocket (which likely won’t happen this year).  I also pay the maximum allowed contributions into my HSA straight from my paychceck (about $260 every 2 weeks).

Are you sure about the $100 p/m with $1,000 deductible? What’s the coverage like once you hit the deductible? Bear in mind not every insurance covers every medication or going to any dr.

We both aren't on any medication, and I don't expect us to never get sick, although we hardly get sick, there's still the odd chance something bad would happen like a car crash or something, but for just a temporary health insurance for a year or something untill we get better jobs I'm sure it would be fine?

I can’t view the link, but just make sure you read the actual policy documents. It’ll show exactly what is covered and what %. Some things may be covered 100% immediately, like GP visits etc, or they might have copays etc.

If you had of been on any meds you’d also want to look at their formulary as for us that would be one of the big deciding factors (my wife takes a few expensive medications that aren’t covered by some policies for example)

I concur with heavily researching healthcare insurance options.

Things can quickly go from being 100% fine one day to needing $80k in care every few weeks. I'm speaking from experience. Without good insurance, this is a disaster waiting to happen.

I would happily move anywhere (I work remotely anyway), but my wife works in a very specific field and is only certified to work in California.

We could live like kings on our income elsewhere haha

Our expenses here are more like 5-6k a month

Click the details of the policy.

Deductible means what you pay yourself before insurance covers anything.

Copay means what you have to pay each time you see the doctor after insurance starts paying.

Coinsurance is the percentage you pay of the cost once you get past the deductible.

Example using 1000 deductible, $30 copay, 20% coinsurance.

Doctor visit bill $150

You pay $150 unless you have already paid $1000 in medical expenses for the calendar year.

If you have  reached that first $1000

Doctor visit $150

You pay $30 (copay each visit)

That leaves $120  remaining for insurance to address

Insurance covers 80% and you pay 20% (coinsurance)

80% of $120 = $96, Your 20% is $24

Each time you see a GP (after paying the first $1000) you pay a total of $54 and insurance pays $96. That only pays for the doctor. Any lab tests, x-rays, or medicines are additional bills.

There are cheap policies with a $50 copay and 50% coinsurance.

After deductible is met a $150 GP visit is $100 your part and $50 paid by insurance.

When Jan 1 rolls around, you start over on deductible.

Use the example to see how the policy plays out in real money.
