My social security card and EAD

More than two years ago, I came to the United States as an international student. About 2 weeks after my arrival, I got my social security card because I was allowed to work on campus. My card came with restriction: "valid for work only with DHS authorization." In last year, I got married to my wife who is a U.S. citizen and I have applied for adjustment of status to permanent resident, including the EAD. Two weeks ago, I got my EAD card and now I want to find a job.

My question is: since I already have the social card, is it okay for me to use it together with the EAD to work? Or I need to have my social security card changed? My AOS is still pending. I called the Social Security Administration and a representative told me to go to the local SSA to find out about it.

Your Social Security # sticks with you for life. When you get your greencard you should go to the Social Security office and get the DHS restriction removed. Good luck.

Yes as a previous poster stated you always have the same SSN... that doesn't change through life. It states that you may work if you have an EAD. Once you get your greencard you may return to your local SSA office and have them remove the wording "valid for work only with DHS authorization". I hope this clears things up.

As I said above, your Social Security Number won't change. Once you get a SS # assigned it stays with you for life. So, yes, you can use your Social Security card that you obtained as an international student. The only thing you should do once you have your greencard is get the DHS restriction removed.

How I know this: I came as an international student myself, and got my Social through campus employment.
