Mollie Tibbetts' death, immigration debate prompt organizers to postpone Iowa Latino festivals

Zach Berg, Iowa City Press-Citizen
Published 11:55 a.m. CT Aug. 24, 2018 | Updated 7:23 p.m. CT Aug. 24, 2018

At least two Iowa festivals dedicated to Latino heritage and scheduled for this weekend were called off in the days after authorities charged a Mexican man they say was in the United States illegally with murder in the abduction and death of Mollie Tibbetts.

Manny Galvez, organizer of the Iowa City Latino Festival, said the decision to postpone Saturday's event was based on "respect for Mollie, her family and friends." He also cited heated rhetoric about Hispanics.

A similar festival in Perry in central Iowa was canceled as well.

Tibbetts, 20, was a University of Iowa student from Brooklyn. She was found dead Tuesday after a month-long search that drew international headlines. Police arrested and charged farmhand Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, in connection with her death.

Federal officials say Rivera was in the country illegally. His lawyer has denied that claim, but has not provided documentation to support it.

I think it will have wider implications for the Latino community, cancelling festivals sets a dangerous president. Respect to the Tibbets family may be their intention but it looks like they are scared of protests instead.

That certainly crossed their minds.   In addition, might most Latinos in Iowa be illegally present to begin with?

I wouldn't be too familiar which areas in the US would attract Latino illegals so will bow to your knowledge on this one.

1800's US I think everyone had a gripe with someone else, depends whoever happened to be the poorest cheapest labor at the time I suppose. Chinese Italians and the Irish all seemed have had a turn.

Manny Galvez owns a newspaper or something and also organizes marches that are pro illegal alien. Since he advocates for illegals I would imagine his “festival” would have a large gathering of illegals in attendance. I would imagine those who are against illegals are not fans of Manny...including the majority of legal Latinos. So who knows why he really cancelled his “festival”?

You have a point there. If it's being led by an illegal activist.

The killing of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts has prompted criticism of the U.S. immigration system because the man charged in her death is a Mexican farmworker. But the victim’s father told mourners he’s been embraced by the local Hispanic community.

Speaking Sunday afternoon to more than 1,000 people at a ceremony at his daughter’s former high school, Rob Tibbetts didn’t directly respond to comments by President Donald Trump and others who quickly seized upon the suspect’s citizenship to argue for changes in immigration laws.

However, The Des Moines Register reports that Tibbetts said he encountered Hispanics at Mexican restaurants and elsewhere who were sensitive and kind during the weeks he spent in the central Iowa community of Brooklyn to help search for his daughter.

“The Hispanic community are Iowans. They have the same values as Iowans,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned, they’re Iowans with better food.”

So people from all over are nice?  Not really sure what is the point, I don't believe anyone has ever said anything bad about Hispanics or any other ethnicity.  It is interesting that one has to read half way down the article to find out that this guy broke immigration laws and was here illegally.

why is that interesting, the article is not about his daughter's killer but about his remarks. american citizens murder each other everyday, it's a waste of time to hyper focus on a murderer's immigration status. which i guess that's why trump/trumpettes leached right on to that angle.

When people break the law there should be consequences and it doesn't matter what the crime is.  This woman would not be dead except for our porous border and lax enforcement.  Then when ICE starts actually enforcing the laws we get the bleeding hearts out there claiming every illegal is a saint.  As to equating this to citizens hurting or killing each other, that is apples and oranges.  The borders and immigration laws need to be enforced and if they were this would not have happened.

Also, I don't believe I ever leached onto anything in my life, but my yard leaches quite well.
