only if you are in the pool where everyone gets an award for trying, merit is not a valid method of measurement. Youth today are shielded from the harsh world of defeat, having to measure up and as adults are incapable of accepting defeat.

When I did not make a team, my parents didn't sue they told me to practice and be better prepared for my next tryout, more often than not I learned I had a better stronger more capable person insider me that just needed motivation not a free ticket to protect my sensibilities

Well, have you ever been threatened while playing video games before? This is a competitive esports event. A high pressure environment involving thousands of dollars - in some cases it can go for millions. It's a career to many of these people. Some are contracted and bankrolled by high rollers and put onto teams. Madden however isn't a team esport typically, so this is generally a one-on-one match elimination. They have endorsement deals, thousands of online followers, and video streams watched by millions. There were known issues about this individual in the past, and this doesn't surprise me, as bad behavior from young men in video gaming is common. Put higher pressure and money into it and you've got a powder keg. It's a breeding ground for young men that have toxic behavior and are ready to snap.

The part that bothers me about this is the press is really talking a lot about the killer, and not so much about the men he murdered. His parents divorce his attitude his this and that. Cry me a river. A loser rich kid that couldn't handle losing out of his sense of self-entitlement and toxicity. One of his victims was a husband and father, and the other was a kind young man that everyone in the community spoke very highly of. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his other targets were women.

Too long have these events had little to no security whatsoever, even as they are sponsored by some of the largest corporations in the industry that don't want to bear any responsibility. Some competitions are full of cheating and drug use, even as lobbyists try to push to make it an Olympic sport. You can't tell me that the guy just suddenly snapped though. You don't bring that kind of gun with a laser sight (!!) to a place like this, this was quite prepared.

If they make video game playing an Olympic sport that this world has really gone down-hill.  Sorry, I am not an addicted gamer, and I do not see the draw for this type of activity, but I suppose if any competition gets out-of-hand, bad stuff can happen.

Yuna, I rarely disagree with a whole lot you say, but today, I must with at least part of your post.  Forgive me in advance.

It's not a sports event.  It's a game match.  Intense perhaps, but if intensity were the issue, or stress, then we would see killings every time Auburn plays Alabama (VERY fierce sports competition).

I used to play video games, and there was no security. People played.  People lost.  And went home dejected.  There is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for this wacko to have killed anyone, let alone themself.  The responsibility lies squarely on the thug who killed people, and perhaps a bit on the parents for raising a kid who holds no respect for human life.  THIS is the issue, not lack of security nor the gaming environment.

/rant off

We have to place the blame where it is due.  I have said before, and been scoffed at, for saying that people who play a lot of games, particularly violent ones, tend to have issues distinguishing between fantasy and reality, and sometimes coping with real life like we had to as kids.

Terrible that others had to perish, but I for one am glad our future gene pool will no longer be polluted with this self-centered idiot.

It's not exactly a competition per say as the industry defines it as a 'sport'.  The IOC is thinking about it, and there's already been 'trial runs'. The thinking is by at least 2024. A very much unregulated and rife with very bad practices sport pumped up with big money.

I'm not disagreeing that the fault is entirely with the shooter, and in no way did I state that it wasn't his fault. However gamers in these events have been raising questions with the corporations for some time now. When people go to sports events or any sort of large event, in general there is some type of screening process or security. Events such as these are a 'soft target'. Imagine if a terrorist chose such a location if you will. Security should be provided, if not by the corporation, but by the venue itself.

I have played games since a very young age as has my husband and most of the people I know. Violent and non-violent. While violent based shooters or fantasy MMO games are largely the market for esports, basketball and football video games are an emerging market increasing in popularity. It is huge overseas in ways America doesn't even fathom, and most of those gamers have also played from an early age and have never murdered anyone. As I was discussing with the husband last night, we can both recall times we have been threatened while playing video games. A video game does not according to studies need to be violent to provoke a reaction in a subject with ''issues''. There is also a gaming culture at large that can be extremely toxic to those participating, making it easy for someone with 'issues' to fester and even feel accepted for their bad behavior. Afterall, their parents aren't going to take responsibility for them.
