In the olden days, paper tax returns were signed in ink and snail emailed to the IRS. W2s were attached to the front. That was the "original" tax return. Because you could fake a 1040 form with $100k income filled in, the NVC wants to see  wage slips (W2, 1099) from employers that verify what's on that tax return you sent them.

 

BUT if you use the transcript option...

 It comes from the IRS so you can't make up fake income to give NVC. The IRS knows what you earned because they get wage reports from your employer. A transcript is more official because it comes from the IRS records of your actual verified filing. THEREFORE, you don't have to show NVC your W2 because they believe the IRS transcript. 

 

Your two choices:

1. A print out of every page and form of a tax return *PLUS* W2s or 1099s.

2. A transcript exactly as it came from IRS with nothing else.

 

You have #2 so go with it. If three years are all run together, that's okay.
