Have you heard of them visiting before the interview though?

I wonder why are you asking.

Did USCIS visit you and you want to know what's that about?

Usually people don't worry about this kind of stuff, unless they have a reason to.

If they have been waiting a long time, longer than usual, then they might have some issues with background checks or whatever, and possibly that's why USCIS wanted to check on them.

It's not a "normal" routine.

My Brazilian friend in Phoenix said that when she married in 2011 her husbands neighbors told them that USCIS came by their house to ask if my friend and her husband were legit.  They only took about 3 minutes of the neighbors time.

I got married in 2006 to an American Citizen and I did not have a surprise (or planned) visit before or after I received my interview. However, that was 12 years ago, and policies may have changed.

It's still very uncommon and only happens if USCIS believes they have a strong reason to physically visit a couple to investigate the relationship. For the most part, that's what the interviews are for: to meet the couple physically and to ask them under oath about their relationship/marriage. So unless the interview was extremely suspicious or unsatisfactory, USCIS won't bother spending their resources and agents' energies to go out for investigation.

They may do a random selection of all cases.  I think based on those findings they decide if the sample size needs to be widened.  But it can also mean that the documentation was shaky.

I have seen it in dodgy situations.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I have heard of such a case. A couple who are a friend to my aunt in Hawaii. The guy got his citizenship by joining the army....later he married a girl who was here on a J-1 student visa. This happened like 3 or 4 months ago. Two immigration officers gave them a surprise visit at their home. Went through the house: looked through the drawers and closet, pictures, all necessary and obvious evidence to show that a couple have been living in that home together. So it is happening.
